Liz thinks the twins need separate bedrooms.  Since they were born, she and Jack have always tried their best to accentuate their individual characteristics.  They’re not “identical” in virtually any sense of the word, but it’s difficult to never treat them as a single entity.  They’re about to start middle school and it seems like an appropriate time to encourage further divergence of their personas.

She stands in the hallway next to Jack.  He opens the door to the twins’ bedroom and they peer inside.

Julia’s exceedingly tidy side of the room contrasts vividly with Isabelle’s more haphazard, thoroughly disorganized domain.

“This must drive Julia nuts,” he sighs.

“If it does, she doesn’t say anything.”

“You’re right.  They definitely need their own rooms.”  Jack puts his arm around her, their eyes roving nostalgically across the room.  “No more babies, huh, Lemon?  Everybody’s grown up.”

He offers up his office to be turned into another bedroom, a coin flip to determine who gets the new room.

Later that afternoon, he has another proposal.

“I think we should take the twins on vacation.  Separately,” is how he starts.  “Something special, each of them with one of us.  A little one on one time.  The remodeling can be done while we’re gone.”

“What about Gracie?”

“There’s no way in hell she’s staying here alone.  Not with Lane within a 1000 mile radius.  How about some one on one time with Grandma and Grandpa Lemon?”

“That’ll probably be a hard sell,” Liz chuckles, “but you can try.”

***

Jack flips the quarter high in the air.  “Call it, Jules.”

“Heads.”

“Heads it is.”

“Sweet, I don’t have to move any of my stuff,” Isabelle says.

Liz tosses a U.S. atlas on the table.  “Before you two run off, there’s one more thing to discuss.”
