“Goddamn it!” Liz shrieks.
She’s already in tears when Gretchen rushes into the kitchen. Thickening smoke hovers above them, a blackened pan of lasagna sits atop the stove.
“It’s fucking ruined,” she sobs.
Gretchen wraps her arms around her. “It’s okay. Don’t cry.”
But Liz continues doing just that, the extent of her distress rather alarming.
“Liz, calm down. It’s not the end of the world.”
They order takeout from the closest Italian restaurant. It’s delivered well before Liz’s parents are due to arrive. But Liz remains horribly on edge, running around the apartment re-straightening everything, rearranging the table, second guessing all of her menu choices.
Close to 7:00, she runs into the bathroom, on the verge of throwing up.
Gretchen’s heart sinks, knowing the true source of Liz’s anxiety.
When Liz reemerges, she’s waiting by the door with her coat.
An even greater level of panic and sadness washes over Liz. “You’re leaving? Why?”
“It’s not the right time to meet your parents…to tell them you’re in a relationship with another woman. You’re not ready, I understand.”
“No, that’s not true.”
“Liz, you’re frantic, almost physically ill. I’m not going to stay here and make things worse.”
She walks out before Liz can respond further. In a cruel twist of fate, she passes Liz’s parents in the lobby as she leaves. She recognizes them from pictures.
She walks home wondering if anyone other than Jack would ever meet the mysterious new “person” in Liz Lemon’s life.
