The vastly overloaded New York Social Services department quickly places a child with Jonathan and Michael as soon as they’re approved to be foster parents. An adorable 4 month old baby girl named Amelia.
The girls are even more ecstatic than they are. They beg to babysit as soon as possible.
But when little Amelia wakes up during the night, crying from hunger, the girls remain fast asleep in their beds.
“You wanna tag team it again?” Liz asks.
“I got the kid, you got the bottle.”
It’s as if they’ve gone back in time more than a decade. Stumbling around in a daze warming bottles, clumsily changing diapers, cleaning up spit up.
Jack feeds Amelia and all his loving, doting instincts reemerge. He even sings to her as he rocks her back to sleep.
Finally back in bed, he wraps his arms around Liz, hugs her to his chest.
“I forgot how wonderful you are with babies, Jack.”
“Don’t you wish we would have had five or six?”
“No way! I would’ve been like 50!”
“You’re right. It wasn’t really possible for us. We got started too late. Sometimes I wish we would have met 20 years earlier.”
She lifts her head, looks up at him. “I don’t think our paths would have even crossed back then, we would’ve never met.”
“You’re right, Lemon. It’s just a fantasy. A fantasy where I get to love you for 20 more years, have lots and lots of babies with you...and live long enough to see our grandchildren.”
Palms pressing into his chest; “Don’t say things like that. Don’t even think that. Of course you’re going to see your grandchildren.”
He kisses one corner of her mouth, then the other, tucks her back under his chin, and prays silently she’s right.
