I think that's ridiculous. You could probably buy silk taffeta and pay a dressmaker to run it up for less than that.

Exactly. And if I make it myself, even lower costs. Sad, in its way.

It's hard to find pretty clothes - try being plus size AND tall!
I would actually love to do more sewing and have EXACTLY what I want, but the only fabrics available in town are quilt cottons, sigh....

Buy fabrics online if you can. Many online places offer swatches, and I've found that even if you don't like what you get, others are often willing to buy them from you at cost, if it is good natural fibers.

Yea, I look and look and look - but I hesitate to buy anything I haven't "felt up", and Himself hesitates to order anything off the Net, sigh.
Can hardly wait tillI have some of "my own" money!

I actually imported silk taffeta (a nice heavy weight) and it was lovely shot ilk, smooth, real taffeta (not dupioni "taffeta") and it averaged ~ $13 a yd including customs. Here's a link from a seller who is willing to take custom orders: http://www.puresilks.biz/store/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=5

Yes, I have ordered from them before. Although they are also the ones who I bought the linen/silk blend that I am not happy with. But I love their taffetas! What colors did you get?
