I found someone locally with wool embroidery thread, btw; don't know if that's of interest or not ($5 per spool).
The Sew'n'Vac on Blackstone near Hancock's.
I haven't seen it elsewhere, which is not to say it's not out there elsewhere, but otoh, I haven't been really looking. My attention was drawn to it, and I was surprised by its presence in the little shop. The gal there said it was typically used by people who want their embroidery to look a little fuzzy (they use a brush on it from what she was saying, something like felting I'm guessing).
