Sewing sleeve puffs

Taking a small break from sewing. Yeah, I gave up on cleaning up the sewing room for a bit, as the sleeve puffs were calling to me, which is odd since I wasn't really in the mood to sew ( Read more... )

If you serge the pieces before you sew, the curves aren't usually a problem (most outfits don't have very tight inside curves...)

I need to practice serging curves, as things sew quicker than I am used to.

And amusingly, the latest Threads magazine has an article on serging for RTW garments. I picked up my copy today, and hope to use it to help me.

Oh, and I am not sure how to serge when one needs to ease one side into the other side, like I did for the sleeve puffs. I really had to pin the heck out of that sleeve shapes, and sergers don't like pins.

That's exactly why I serge before sewing rather then after :-). Well, and that's how theatre wants you to do it becase it's much easier to adjust the fit if the edges are serged seperately rather then using the serging to do the sewing (and in theatre you have to plan for an outfit to be worn by multiple actors.) I'm not sure how the RTW industry deals with that - possibly sew it on a regular machine first and then serge the armseye...
