At this weekend's annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, the JJ Abrams-helmed sequel - lauded for its cinematography, strong performances and action scenes - was voted the worst Star Trek movie of the entire canon by avid Trekkies.
Really? This makes no sense to me. Discuss!

And I was so sad to see how rapidly Leonard Nimoy had aged before TMP, even. A living lesson in the ravages of cigarettes and excessive alcohol, both of which he has kicked, thank God.

I think part of the problem is that people have just gotten so rude. I popped over to Trekmovie - and I cannot believe what they are saying right to Bob Orci.
I don't understand why are so many are having trouble accepting the new canon. I am an older fan - but I didn't watch the non-TOS iterations - until AFTER ST09 brought me back to the fold. So, I am not a typical older fan.

Seriously, though, it was 100 people, not everyone at the convention. The types of people who still go to these types of fan conventions are the hardest of the hard-core fans who have basically invested their lives and identities into the fandom. The type who voted STID last in this poll seem to be the insular fans who don't want Star Trek to change from the 90s. And before we get our knickers in a twist about what these hundred people think, let's drop some true-facts: Star Trek Into Darkness is the highest-rated of all of the big summer tentpole movies on Rotten Tomatoes this summer with 87% fresh rating. It is also the only tentpole movie of this summer that is in the top-250 at IMDb. Most people LIKE this movie. The Star Trek fans that don't like this movie still have their dvds of TMP or FF or Insurrection to cuddle up to. JJ and company are trying to reach a wider audience than the CreationCon going fan, and it seems they are succeeding.

By the way, I'm reading that the person who conducted the poll is someone who has a known axe to grind against JJ Abrams, but that is internet hearsay.
