Good morning! I'm mistyzeo, and I've always wanted to do one of these! What a lovely surprise to be asked; I hope I can be as interesting as everyone seems to think I am. Many thanks to britomart_is!
No, okay -- an actual question. What do you find is the hardest part of writing a story? Is it starting, or finishing, or coming up with an idea, or coming up with a title, or writing the little connective tissue bits between scenes, or is it something else, or is it all easy because you're just that amazing?
This is all really interesting stuff! I love hearing about other people's ~processes.
I had a few scenes that I KNEW I wanted to include, but they weren't consecutive, and I had to do a lot of wiggling around to get them into place and the scenes between them written
This begs the question: do you write out of order? Because I often have scenes I know I want to include, too, but I seem to be pathologically incapable of writing things out of order so I have to just sort of hold those scenes in my head while I power frantically towards them.
I usually don't. It's the outlining thing again. If I have scenes that I know I want I usually make myself work to get there. If I write them out of order, I find myself trying to explain things that would have been explained in an earlier scene, and it's hard for me to give that up. So yeah, mostly I hold them in my head until I know the fic is ready for them.
This mean that my NaNo this year is really struggling (no thanks to school), because I have scenes that I know need to happen, but I have later scenes that I want to write, and I have to get through the 'need' scenes before I can write the 'want' scenes. Like I have to build the sexual tension in the coffee shop and at the bank robbery before they can fall into bed, but oh my god that bed scene is going to be incredible why can't I just write it right now?
:P Stop it, stop that, you have one hour to stop that immediately.
I'm pretty terrible at writing angst, or sadness, or conflict of any meaningful kind. I don't enjoy it. I don't like making my characters suffer deeply to come to a profound conclusion. I love fluff, and snuggling, and minor misunderstandings that lead to painless making up and sex. I'm also not very good at writing UST, or I find it difficult, because I want the gratification to come as soon as possible. I love it when people are in love, MFEO, etc, and I want them to get there right away. So I don't write dark fic, and I don't write death fic, and I don't write a lot of tortured SamnDean being fucked up. I write them at their happy moments. I try to acknowledge that they are fucked up and strange and so on, but I like catching them in times of as near to joy as they can get
( ... )
I love bodyswap fic. Oh my god. Never not hilarious. And always ends in sex. Bonus!
I also love J2 college AUs (says the college student). I tend to write them a lot because they're close to home and they leave a lot of room for screwing around with rules and permissions and characterizations. A lot of crazy shit happens at college, and our boys can find every way imaginable to meet, fall into bed, fall in love, fight, drink, snuggle, etc. I love it!
Hm, I wasn't aware of your apparent obsession with the band Road Head, but I did notice that you like J2 college AUs. Any school AUs remind me of Harry Potter, and the requisite broom closet H/D fic, which makes me super happy. And bodyswap fic! I want to write really, really maudlin bodyswap fic.
I'm very fond of their song Touch My Body. :P I also love boarding school AUs, probably because they remind me of Harry Potter, and the crazy uncontrollable sexuality of teenagers is alluring.
Oh yay, I get to ask you questions!!! I always want to know what it is about Sam and Dean that inspires someone to write them. I know what I find inspiring about them, but I love hearing what awesome writers like you see in the characters that make them compelling to write. What's your favorite situation or emotion to write for the boys?
Oh boys. I think it's how into each other they are. Even if it's not romantic, their deep crazy connection is obvious, and palpable, and I feel obligated to give them a way to express their need for each other. It's like they're caught up in their tension, wound up so tight they can't function, with no way of letting it out on the Show. I feel like we as writers are obligated to allow them that release.
I love writing them in love. I think that Show gives them enough situations in which to be stressed and under pressure, and sometimes I want them to get a break. They need a moment to take a breath and appreciate how important they are to each other, and for me that means they have to be in love. It's not about fucking, although that is a fun component, but about their emotional connection that can't be explained any way else. So when they're in love, and they can rely on each other and that love, that's when I think they're at their best, both in fic and in Show.

Instead, what do you not like to write and why?
(Also, how so awesome?)
