Hi. My name is Sarah and I’m thrilled missyjack asked to be the vidder this month on Ask the Vidder. If there’s something I enjoy as much as vidding, it’s talking about it. So please ask me questions!

I’ve made just over 30 vids in the SPN fandom and they are listed here if you want to check any of them out ( Read more... )

Hiya! I've got very basic, technical questions (I've actually been asking these a few different vidders lately): what software do you work with? Have you experimented with editors that you don't normally use? Do you work with a combination of editors?

(I'm an occasional vidder, and I've never made a masterpiece, but I just made a switch from Windows Movie Maker to Sony Vegas. I'm just wondering if I made the right switch. *g*)

Hey there.

I use Final Cut Express. (I have a mac). I started on iMovie. It was a pretty steep learning curve going from one to the other, but well worth it.

I only use FCE. From what I hear Vegas is really good so I would say you've certainly made the right switch.

All the best with your vidding.

I love opening my editor to a blank timeline.
Best feeling in the world ;)

While others would like a beta to talk about every aspect of the vid from top to bottom.
+1 I guess I love speaking about my video, though I don't have my beta. I'd like to but i guess there's just no such person in the world who can stand me with all my videos *roll eyes*

So, my question is about the music. You can vid ANYthing - angst, funny crack videos, wincest even (ok, I'm still surprised :D), and of course you used in your videos all kinds of music. So how usually you pick up the song? Do you search for the specific kind of music when you have an idea? Or, maybe, you listen to the music and then you heard something and you're like "oh, i wanna vid it!"? Do you pay more attention on the music (beats, instrumentals, etc.) or to the lyrics? I'm kinda interesting because for me, I think< the music is more important than the idea. You know, there's these songs that can "drag out" the video, the idea. Just because the song is so cool by default lol Anyway, ( ... )

Hi Loki!

Great question. Thank you.

In most cases I hear a song and and it's "oh, I wanna vid that!" I love it when that happens. I then listen to the song a heap of times before I decide if it's something I think I could make a vid to. The lyrics play a huge role if I want to tell a story. But I always try to work with the beat as well or rather the "rhythm and flow" of the music. I do like songs with a strong beat. For me it makes editing a lot easier. :D

Occasionally I have an idea and I have to go searching for a song. "Take me to the Hospital" is a good example of this. I wanted to make a hurt!boys vid and I needed to find a song I could use. It took quite a while to find the right song.

I like "interesting music" so I can play with effects, try to "show the music" you know?

Yeah. And it's something you do incredibly well. I have never used purely instrumental music to tell a story. (Man! I have enough trouble trying to tell a story with lyrics). That might just have to be on my list of challenges ( ... )

Glad you liked the question!^^

Same here, same here =) Usually, then I go and watch the lyrics. As English isn't my native language, it's easier for me to actually see the lyrics and then try to imagine the images in my head. There were plenty of videos that I had to give up - I really liked the music, and the tone of the song, but the lyrics wasn;t what I wanted.

Yeah. And it's something you do incredibly well.
Oh...*blushes* thank youo so much! *smishes* I'm really glad you liked it in my videos, because for me it's one of the most important things.

(Man! I have enough trouble trying to tell a story with lyrics)
ACTUALLY, if you have troubles making an AU video - the instrumental song is just perfect for you. Because you don't have a lyrical guide lines to follow your story, you know? So you just can vid whatever story you want! ;) Maybe you should try it?

I'm ALWAYS on the look out for songs....almost every time I hear a song I wonder ( ... )

Thanks for answering that hun. I imagine you'd have to listen to a lot of music to as many as you do!

making 4-5 vids in a month isn't normal, is it?

You know, if I had the opportunity to make that many I probably would! I would love to be able to have a good run at a vid, but most times it's snatching moments here and there. I'm lucky when I can get a couple of hours at a time. :D
