LOL. "Edgy" is one of my pet peeves, especially when used by arts folk who have no idea what they really mean. "It should be edgy but family-friendly". Do I want to know what inspired this?

Too many examples inspired this post but the last straw was Amanda Palmer, and if you haven't heard her name this week then you probably don't want to know. Let's just agree that anyone who feels a need to self-describe their work as "edgy" is probably producing work that isn't worth paying attention to.... ;-)

I am probably happier not knowing then. I don't "get" her at all.

I suspect I probably do mostly "get" Amanda F. Palmer but that doesn't mean I have to prop up her career when she's wearing the Emperor's New Pants. Truly, as for most of us, I'm sure there is enough fail in your experience of daily life to cause you more than sufficient headdesking without adding to the failpile. ::wryface::

I want to paint a giant glittery splodge over it that says GLAM ROCK!

It of course depends whether you want to call the person in question that. I'll just add that she is a big momus fan, so WHY IS EVERYONE SURPRISED?

The diagram is more aimed at people who describe themselves as "edgy", hence the " ". I'm told she also simulated sexual assault to signify her support for gay marriage? Which is, I'm sure, precisely the sort of "support" that the kind of non-straight people who want to enter the monogamous and heteronormative institution of marriage are hoping for... NOT. ::wryface::

I would join in with rubbishing momus but you're sooo much bettererer at it than I am.... ;-P

No I meant whether she sees herself as glamrock. Which is possible. Her stuff is accepted in Stay Beautiful though I always thought it was more goth.

Ah for the days when she supported the Legendary Pink Dots on tour! They wouldn't stand for this shit. Momus would though.

I can't think of 'edgy' now without thinking of that 'Daria':

Jake: '"Edgy"... I keep hearing that word from my clients. Everyone wants "edgy." What is it?'
Val: '"Edgy" is going right up to the edge of the cliff and being able to see all the way down, and dancing anyway!'
Jake: 'What the hell does that mean?'
Helen: (hurriedly) 'How do you like the chilli, Val?'
Val: 'It rocks! Are these cheese puffs?'
Jake: 'I got the recipe from your magazine. Is it "edgy"?'
Val: 'We only do edgy. That's what drew me to Daria's essay, "My So-Called Angst". I'm sure Daria can tell you all about "edgy". She is it, and I mean "it" with a capital I-T.'
Helen: 'Daria, you've barely said a word.'
Val: 'Yeah, Daria, tell your dad what "edgy" is.'
Daria: 'As far as I can make out, "edgy" occurs when middlebrow, middle-aged profiteers are looking to suck the energy - not to mention the spending money - out of the "youth culture". So they come up with this fake concept of seeming to be dangerous when every move they make is the result of market ( ... )

Heh.

I think "edgy" being debunked on popular tv pre-2003 means it's irretrievably old meme which would explain why Old Folks such as RTD use it....

(Between that and conjoined twins being sooo 1990s... I rest my case (y'know, the case I never made in the first place due to laziness).]

THIS. THIS IS WHAT RUNS THROUGH MY MIND ANY TIME ANYONE USES THE WORD "EDGY."*

Also, icon!

*Except when referring to an actual edge of an actual physical object.

Sadly, it's far more widely applicable than only Palmer but, yes, her shenanigans this week tipped me over the edgy edge into actually spending five minutes making and uploading a macro.

Someone needs to print this onto a billboard and paste it outside every venue she does a performance at. Maybe then she'll start Getting It.

Heh. I think a billboard and newspaper ad campaign is probably appropriate at this point. It doesn't even need to be aimed at Palmer cos, y'know, there's plenty of fail to go around. ::wryface::

OPTIMISM IS GOOD! THAT'S WHY THEY ALMOST NAMED A TRANSFORMER AFTER IT!!1!!
