Good job. I thought these words were particularly awkward, but you did well with them.

Thanks. I didn't have any trouble, but having many genres to play with helped.

As I said, awkward….

“You’ll undertake this mission with your usual style. It will be -” Illya’s brow furrowed, “right up your driveway.”

“Up my alley … and I don’t see why I’m being railroaded -” Napoleon met his partner’s blank stare and rolled his eyes. “- coerced into spending my Friday evening at this particular soiree.”

“Obviously to protect the young ladies as they make their first venture up the social stepstool.”

“Social ladder … and I think you’re trying to sidetrack me with that ‘guileless Russian’ act, Kuryakin.”

Illya grinned. “Perhaps I’m simply thankful Waverly didn’t assign me to babysit a gaggle of seventeen year old debutants.”

This is fun, DP. Oh, what a clever Illya; I do like how his 'guileless Russian act'.

A very good use of, as you say, awkward words.

Thanks. Illya’s difficulty with slang, whether a guileless act or not, does sometimes help me out.

Yes, slang is probably the hardest thing for any non-native speaker to really get to grips with. There are Americanisms I get lost with and I know the reverse is true at times too.

It's a useful tool where Illya is concerned *g*

Oh, this is fun, Spike. I can see this unfold, quite clearly. Nicely done and a good use of the words.

“Would you please explain to me again exactly why we agreed to undertake this assignment?”

“To get back on Mr. Waverly’s good side,” Solo hissed, as the agents crept down the alley toward the railway yard. “See that red car over there?”

Kuryakin nodded.

“That’s our target.”

“We’ll need a ladder or a stepstool, at least…” the Russian said. “It’s a small opening… I’ll fit better...”

“Are you saying I’m fat?”

“I’m faster.” Illya snorted. “I’ll hand you the case of Aquitine…”

“…which I can rush back for the Section Chiefs’ Social Hour.

“Thrush never appreciated the stuff, anyway.”

One should always stay on Mr. W's good side. A nice use of words, OF.

Here's my attempt.

"Detective Crocker, what exactly were you and Lieutenant Kojak doing in the alley?" PD Dawlish sneered at Bobby.

"Tracking a murderer."

"Your Honor!"

"Detective Crocker! You know better than that."

"I apologize, your Honor. We were tracking a suspected murderer."

"What did you find?"

"A ladder and a stepstool beneath the window of the murdered social-worker. Your client's fingerprints were everywhere."

"My client claims you decided to undertake the task of trying to railroad him into confessing to the murder. Whereas, he was the one who found the deceased."

Bobby sighed silently; it was going to be a long afternoon.

The words were awkward to fit together this week, but you did very well. This is a believable scene.
