She and her Grace Brothers coworkers stood in the alley behind the store. “But it’s ever so high up!” Miss Brahms said, obviously dismayed.
“That’s why you never take a stepstool to a party when you can take a ladder. Mr. Humphries, boost me up.”
“I’ve heard of climbing the social ladder, but never thought you’d stoop to it.”
“I’m not missing that bleeding sale.”
Mrs. Slocomb’s bloomers flashed and Mr. Humphries paled, then sang. “Once I built a railroad, I made it run*.”
