So earlier this week I got involved in the anti-sealing debate via facebook. I was absolutely disgusted by the comments from many many people APPLAUDING the recent deaths of sealers in Newfoundland, so I started to write and contribute to several groups, going as far to personally email the creators (mostly to address the issues around their ( Read more... )

I made a post about it in the same group, and she wrote such a shitty reply to what I was trying to say, telling me I'm wrong and that I can't possible love any kind of animal if I'm pro-seal hunt and I was so disgusted I deleted my entry and the group, because I hated the feeling of being so mad. I seriously want to actually punch her. I never feel that way. You just can't change people's minds who are so absolutly 100 persent positive that there way is the only way. I made points about ivory hunting, bison hunting, even people killing trantulas in africa and asked her if the only reason she cared about this was because seals were cute and she was all "Oh, that's not even the same thing. People don't NEED seal to survive, and people ARE against those things, I just chose to make my facebook group about this" but you being BANNED for standing up for something you believe in? I think I might report the group, see if I can get her banned.

I've been reporting her too, especially on the anti-semitic/hitler comment. It's ludicrous these people get away with such a fucking ridiculous protest. It's really hard to understand how this whole movement came about and even harder to fathom why our government and people TOLERATE these ridiculous hi-jinx that are nothing short of cultural terrorism.

I actually saw that post and thought you made excellent points. The problem with those people is that their conviction to the cause is blinding. Some people are never willing to budge, never willing to reconsider anything other than what they believe is true. It's pretty ridiculous that your post was immediately met with the same illogical resistance, but not surprising. Instead of truly considering the bigger picture, these people are hell bent on tearing holes in people's statements, drawing attention to what they perceive are flaws in the statements made, but never really taking the content of it seriously. It's the same thing as beating your head off a wall. I've dealt with people like that in the past and just let it slide, but I really don't think facebook should allow the group to exist. It's ridiculous to think that someone from another country, another part of the world, who knows nothing about Newfoundland or aboriginal cultures can start a hate group to encourage boycotting and create negative attitudes and perceptions.
