The first time they'd faced off--in another hallway, another moment when they should simply have passed each other by--it had felt so much more like a whirlwind, like getting swept away without quite catching sight of the wave until it was already passed its crest, receding. This time, Kanda felt it all so much more calmly, like he was watching them from above, like he could see everything.
His gaze didn't falter as he watched Heine approach, meeting him eye to eye and reading the sharp edge of pleasure that tugged at his lips. Kanda couldn't help the wicked half-smirk that curved his mouth in answer. "Shiroi kami," he said, low and dangerous, not giving a damn whether or not the man ( ... )

them had met, and during that encounter Heine had commented on Kanda's ballsy attitude. More importantly, he had commented on how Heine had liked his ballsy attitude. In that moment, as he watched the dark-haired man raise to the challenge, saw his own cocky and aggressive smirk mirrored back at him and heard the tone of those words that Heine didn't understand, he was reminded explicitly of why he had felt such twisted approval of the guy's attitude ( ... )

His first assumption was that the final insult--not just a petty slight about the stranger's appearance but something targeted at his status, his honor, his humanity--had risen to a level that the first two hadn't achieved. And for now he had no reason to second guess that presumption. After all, to be a cur was to be a lowlife, inferior, dirty, a reprobate and a wretch. Who wouldn't be ticked off by that?
Whatever the reason, Kanda had gotten a rise out of the guy, and he liked that. He didn't know how close he'd come to being grabbed by the throat, but he did sense the spikes in the energy between them, and though his own smirk didn't broaden, he felt incredibly satisfied--more so than he had since he'd arrived here, a kind of satisfaction not unlike what he felt on the battlefield ( ... )
