This wasn't supposed to happen.

This wasn't supposed to happen, damnit!

Spirit stared up at the two women hovering over him with his one good eye, expression of hurt on his face. They were familiar faces despite their vicious, twisted features. Two witches under Shibusen's protection, two girls Spirit had thought were friends. Sure they were cabaret girls in the city, but they were good girls, and they were harmless ( ... )

Spirit wasn't comfortable with Kanda and Yuuri disappearing from view with Risa. Risa and Arisa weren't particularly strong by witch standards, but they were still witches and capable of surprisingly competent attacks.

Risa at that moment was coming down on Kanda and Yuuri with all her rage. She didn't care about pain or damage -- the black blood took care of that -- and the lack of fear made her reckless. To her, getting mauled didn't matter if she could deal with this irritating meister.

Arisa, on the other hand, had more reason to dodge Spirit. The blade of a deathscythe could do far more damage, and her self-preservation instincts were still a little intact. She jumped back and back as Spirit pursued her, backing deliberately into the girl and her weapon. Perhaps to use as hostage, or to remove all the protection they gave the target.

If the witch had an advantage here, it was that she knew exactly what the black blood would do for her. Kanda knew it had healed her once, of course, but what exactly the substance was and how it functioned was a mystery to him. He fought her just as he would any enemy capable of death which, to his mind, was everyone.

Somersaulting forward just beneath her leap down towards them, he slid under her just before her feet hit the ground, coming up at her back and immediately spinning around even before he got to his feet.

With Yuuri braced hard in his grasp, he drove the sword home, angling the point of the blade up--a strike designed to hit her in the lower back and impale her clean through to her breastbone.

The blood staining the Maou's blade seemed to become absorbed into the finely shaped metal while Kanda fought. Whatever reasoning this witch had before this day seemed to be null-and-void from what he could tell, and it was all the more reason for Kanda and himself to put an end to this woman's life.

He could feel a power coursing through his form as Kanda moved to strike up at the Witch's back. While it wasn't anything like the majutsu he used in the demon kingdom, it felt somewhat reminiscent to it.

Training or not this battle was still moving a little too quickly for Winry to keep up with as well as she'd like. It was a bit frustrating to learn that despite all those months of nearly non-stop work she was still pretty out of her league when she was so sure she had come far.

As it was, with so much of her concentration solely on Spirit, it took her a bit to realize that the Witch was nearing her.

Kanda's speed was too fast for Risa, and bereft of her logic, she wasn't in any state to predict her enemy's movements. The blade struck her true through her chest, blood making a mess of whatever her earlier bleedings had made of her dress. Risa's scream turned into a gurgled choke as blood welled from her lungs to her mouth, dribbling black from her lips. No matter, no matter, she would heal. As soon as she was away from this sword, and she grasped the blade that had run through her with her hands, guiding herself by touch as she tried to hover off. She had not noticed the strange activity of the weapon. It would be a surprise for her to find out that she would not heal as fast after.

Arisa extended her hand as she neared Winry, claws out but not to a lethal length as before. Spirit pursued her with all his speed, but his breath was labored and even with all his determination, he couldn't catch Arisa first. "Winry!"

The witch reached out with the intention of plucking Winry off the ground with a hand, intent on using her as

Had he been fighting an earthbound foe, or one who'd been pinned down in place, Kanda's next move would have been clear: wrench the sword upward, cleave clean through from chest to neck, slice right up through her skull. But there were factors here beyond his control, and the witch's flight gave her an escape route he was unable to block ( ... )

His blade effortlessly sliced through the flesh of the Witch. He could feel his form becoming further empowered, and as a result, each swipe of his bladed-form appeared to slow the healing speed of their target.

The enemy's fingers wrapped around his wide blade. Was she attempting to pull them away from this area? This was a situation that was dangerous, but he held faith in Kanda's abilities to gain the upper hand.

Winry saw the claws reaching for her, and she scrambled to move out of the way but she wasn't quick enough. She felt them encircling around her waist, and felt them cutting into her a slight bit. She let out a hiss of pain but was more worried when she felt herself being lifted up into the air. She tried to twist herself out but the more she moved, the more she could feel those claws digging into her.

Anger and frustration trumped the fear she felt, no, she would not allow herself to become a liability. Miranda unfortunately did not have many offensive abilities so she had only one option left to her. Stein's technique.

She curled a fist readying herself. She probably only had one chance at this, so she waited till the Witch pulled her closer.

Risa gurgled in the middle of a scream, clutching at the hole in her chest as she struggled to rise high -- as high as she could manage to get, to escape from Kanda. Why wasn't she healing? She was supposed to heal! It hurt, it hurt it hurt it hurt.

Thick, black blood streamed down her chest and to the ground below. Instead of remaining there, however, the mass suddenly seemed to take on a life of its own and lunged forward in thin, lethal-sharp spikes. Anything to get Kanda and Yuuri away from Risa.

Arisa did pull Winry to herself, her free hand poised near her neck in an obvious threat. Spirit abruptly stopped mid-charge and bent over to decrease the pain of his broken ribs and punctured lung. "Back off, deathscythe," she hissed.

"Leave Winry alone," he muttered, spitting blood into the pavement and wondering how he was going to get Winry out of there. He wasn't going to sacrifice Winry for this. "You want me, right? Come get me."

It was Kanda's reflexes alone that saved him from the sudden attack of those needle-like spikes. An instant before they formed, a sense in his gut warned him something was coming. The sort of sense that was honed by years on the battlefield in his own world, it was a sensation he didn't ignore.

Wrenching the sword free, he tumbled back and to the side, rolling away from the range of the strange black spines. A few caught him, ripping through clothes and the surface of skin. One pierced a shoulder. But they were flesh wounds alone, and not nearly enough to bring him down.

He'd have to be careful of another volley from them though, and as he jumped back up to his feet he readied himself in case the witch had something else in mind.
