Near's fingers hover over the communicator, pondering what to say. Welcome back doesn't quite do it, not considering they need to be properly introduced in the first place; he can't just go and greet L like that. Near does respect him, and certain dynamics should be kept no matter the circumstances; the dynamics of their relationship-- if it had ever been anything resembling a relationship, even back when Near was a child and L played the role of their mentor-- even more so.
It's likely that L already knows about him, but Near uses the text function anyway; after all, being one of the heads of the Detective Agency makes things a bit too public for Near's liking.]pErhaps Resting ( ... )

...you. And which others? You said "heirs", plural, but there were many.

[Cocky, perhaps, even though coming off as such is not his intention; he is only stating the facts. Near and Mello had always been the ones most interested in following L's footsteps and the only ones that ever could; Matt had never shown any interested in taking the throne, so to speak, nor had he been high enough in the line of succession to even consider it.]

Near. Tell me. How long has it been since I died? From your perspective?

Mello. I was told that you were here... it seems to be true.
Has it been nine years from your perspective, as well? Or have you died? You and Matt didn't outlive Near, I know that much...

[A way to admit he's dead without admitting it, which he sees is pointless, but which feels necessary.
The 'nine years' gives away the source of L's information, and if he knows that much, he likely knows everything, except the parts Near himself can only guess at. The ones Mello hesitates to tell, knowing his own methods were several steps outside what L's likely to deem acceptable.
Which is why he doesn't show his face yet. He'll have to, eventually, but there are more important things to discuss first.]
Yagami and Amane have both been here, too.

I know. I know what happened. Near has very helpfully briefed me on my extinguished future, thank you.
[That tetchiness? It's not personal. Not in the least. If L was consciously thinking about it, he'd probably reach the conclusion that Mello, of all people, might understand.]
They've been here? What was the outcome of that? With knowledge of how the case played out to the very end, surely someone could come forward with compelling proof.

You're clearly good with codes. What did you do in your home world?

How do you know we passed each other? You do not know what my face looks like; are you merely assuming that this is the case?

The video switches on to show Matt looking a bit pleased and hiding a bit of awkwardness at the same time. And there, just off to the side of him a couple feet away, the view also picks up the figure of a boy hunched over, back to him but what can be seen is grey skin and four horns on top his head.]
I don't think you need me to tell you he's not here, pretty sure someone's already beaten me to it by now.
[A slight shrug, almost a bit of a falter there. Never one too good at emotional or social things.]
I'm going to take a guess you don't remember the last time you were here. Not surprising. Mello was the same way.

Several someones, as a matter of fact. And no, I don't remember, though a handful of individuals seem to remember me.
This is not comforting. I do not forget...
Who is with you? Your partner...?

I think it's safe to assume you're not the same you that was here before. There was a different Mello that was here before this one as well, and I think he took the information about as well as you are now.
[A pause for just a moment, glancing over his shoulder towards the boy with a bit of faint amusement before looking back at the device.]
Yeah, that's my Meister. You've already spoken with him actually, he has a habit of introducing himself as TA to strangers.

He stares at the screen for a moment, an eerie, little, unblinking thing, eyes seeming to glow in the dimness beyond Matt's shoulder (all reflection and refraction), still and unmoving for all of a minute. When he moves, it's to bare his teeth, a flash of white before he's turning again, picking up his own flat little SC, rising to his feet to slink out of the range of the camera's view.
Personable fellow, obviously. ]
