I don't think I'm the best person when it comes to pets, but I was thinking that I should get a pet dog to keep me company here. What should I know about them, aside from keeping them fed, cleaning up after them, and possibly taking them out for walks often?

They're a surprising amount of work, and seem to possess reserves of energy. They also need to be properly trained from a young age.
I'm far from an expert on different breeds, but I may be able to put you in contact with someone that is.

Who is your contact?

Hatake Kakashi, if you're familiar with him. He's rather fond of them.

You sound familiar. Have I met you before?

We were colleagues for a while, but that was some time ago.

Get trash cans with lids. Mei here got into so much garbage before we finally got better trash cans.

I'll keep that tip in mind, thank you, Toph.

Dog-proof your house, especially if you're getting a puppy or untrained dog. Know your breed and what to expect from them--ie, don't get a howler like a beagle and expect them to keep quiet. Set firm rules and stick to them with regards to mealtimes, rooms he's permitted to be in, furniture he's allowed on, and remain strict with these rules. He learns best from repetition, and becoming lax on your rules doesn't teach him anything.
But remember: dogs aren't just 'company.' They're your responsibility. They're teammate, child, friend, and they depend on you for support and care.

You seem to be an expert in dogs. Do you own one here in the city?

Well, I have one here and several back home.

I don't have a dog, but I do have another pet and I think that about covers it.
You could maybe train it to follow a few commands though.

Oh? What kind of pet is it?
