I don't think I'm the best person when it comes to pets, but I was thinking that I should get a pet dog to keep me company here. What should I know about them, aside from keeping them fed, cleaning up after them, and possibly taking them out for walks often?

Well, bigger dogs obviously need more space and often tend to be more active. If you can't dedicate a lot of time to them, I'd suggest something like a pug, maybe.

Also, vet bills are pretty pricey. Obviously, try to find one that fits your lifestyle. Don't go for a puppy, either -- that's almost cruel. The benefits of a shelter dog that's a few years old, even, far outweighs getting a "new" dog. They tend to be trained and you know what they'll look like and act like; with puppies, they'll change.

I think I can spare enough time to meet the needs of an active dog. I don't think it would be a very good idea for a military man to be seen with a very small dog. [He chuckles.]

I'll look into getting a shelter dog, then. Do you know any such shelters here in the city?

Hm, for loyalty and activity, maybe... a Golden Retriever, Collie, or German Shepard? I've heard lovely things about Greyhounds, as well.

You know, I don't think I've heard of one! I've been here a while, now, and I've been thinking of looking into getting a dog or maybe a cat, myself.

Mm... [He is actually not familiar with particular breeds, but he thinks he can discern which one he would like in person.]

If I do go out to visit a shelter, would you like to come with me, Zatanna?

[It would be great if she could help him pick out a good breed, too, as he knows nothing about the dog breeds in this world.]
