Gai's made a great many relationships and friends, none of which he wants to lose.

But at the end of the day, Gai is a ninja. He's dedicated to Konohagakure. They're in the middle of a war and his duty is to be there, fighting for them, giving of himself to the best of his abilities. This is what he gave his word to do. To do otherwise would be to become a missing-nin and betray the village that trained and trusted in him.

It's not that it's an easy choice. There's nothing easy about it. But there's no choice to it, either, in his mind.]

[ Jade isn't as clingy as she was when she was thirteen. She's a bit more reserved, doesn't always fling herself at people.

[ naruto has never really considered himself close to the other instructors from konoha. kakashi had been one thing- but, but the leaders of every other team had all been figures he'd seen in passing and nothing more. and yet, in death city, he'd had the opportunity to see gai up and running. offering invaluable if not always unsolicited advice, and generally wanting nothing more than the well being of death city and everyone in it.

seeing him, however, does leave the blond with no shortage of mixed feelings. and his stomach twists uncomfortably, just once. ]
