i had the same problem when i brought home a kitten to be my cat's "pal". for months it was endless fighting, and i live in a small apartment with no way of separating the two. but once i got the kitten fixed, they became fast friends. the eldest was already fixed. this may solve your problem if you haven't done it already. best of luck.

Thanks for the thought and your kind wishes. However, my cats are both fixed and have gotten along for almost 3 years before this started. I'm pretty sure the fighting started when a gray cat started coming into our yard, upsetting my two cats. They started taking it out on each other. One would see the cat outside, start growling and hissing, and the other would approach to see what was going on and get hissed at in turn. Jango started stalking Phaedra, and she would back herself into a corner at which point he would pounce and she would scream.
It's been going on for over a year now (off and on) and it's hard sometimes to get a decent night's sleep.

my cats do the same when one of them sees another cat outside, but the don't fight for long. but i know what it's like to loose sleep because of the pets in your life - frustrating!
i've heard that mothballs keep cats away. can't hurt to invest a buck and try it. another remedy i've heard is using ground red pepper around your fence. the little grey cat will suffer a few sneezes but it sounds to me that there will be no peace in your house until that cat goes away. good luck!

This is what I'd love to buy to keep it out of the yard. It's on the expensive side, but I think it would be most effective!!! Plus it would have high entertainment value!
Jax, you do realize that your opinion seems to be in the minority here?!? I think if you jumped on the bandwagon and got yourself a cat you'd see how sweet and affectionate they really are.
My vet described that behavior as redirected aggresion. Annie and I had Gus out on the porch with the new cat and he was growling and hissing. Annie kept poking him to get him to stop.. well he bit her. So maybe it wasnt really redirected.heh.
Yes, my vet mentioned something similar when I brought it up last year. If Phaedra is growling at Jango and I approach her, she'll turn and growl/hiss and even swat at me!

Still, they're my babies and I love them.

Good luck with the cats and the sleep. I shouldn't talk, though: I get up at 2am to keep my feline overlords fed and happy.
