SPN J2 Big Bang Art Post: Dignity of Dragons

Jul 22, 2012 11:48

Story title: Dignity of Dragons
Author: etrix
Fic Masterpost: Here
Pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13

Summary: Technically, Harley found the lizard (which was actually a dragon!) and Jared took it home because it was hurt (even though his mama had said no more pets). It was okay though, because Jared didn't intend to keep it. In fact, it had to have escaped from one of the government zoos (and having it in the house was probably dangerous), so Jared planned on returning it (but the dragon had plans of his own).

Featuring a (nearly) 17-year-old Jared, his family, and his family's pets (which include 2 dogs, 1 bird, 1 gerbil and 2 turtles) and Jensen as the dragon (of course). Also starring Kurt Fuller, Misha Collins, Charles Malik Whitfield, Samantha Ferris and Rob Benedict. With appearances by Jim Beaver, Katie Cassidy, Mark Pellegrino, Demore Barnes, and Lindsey McKeon.

Artist's Notes: I am beyond grateful to have had the chance to do the art for this delightful story - and it truly is delightful. Even if RPF is not your usual cup of tea, I strongly encourage you to read this story. It's sweet, and just plain fun. The author was wonderful to work with, and was always willing to bounce ideas back and forth. In fact, she gets full credit for the alphabet idea, which was great fun for me to work on (designing the letters helped save my sanity during an all-day meeting at work). Best of all, I got to draw dragons, and all sorts of other critters! As per usual, technical notes are at the end, where they're easier to skip.

Cover - As soon as I read the story, I knew I had to somehow incorporate the entire menagerie that occupies the Padalecki household.

Drop Caps - At some point, I do plan on doing the rest of the Dragon Alphabet, but for now, here are the ones used in the story. Celtic knotwork is amazingly addictive to draw.

The other thing I knew I absolutely needed to draw was the quartet of dragons at the Kansas City Zoo.

Of course, even after the last word, the story isn't entirely over...

Technical Notes: All drawings were done with watercolor pencils and outlined/detailed with Micron pens in black and sepia. Paper used was watercolor paper and vellum-finish Bristol board. Some color correction was done in iPhoto and SketchBook Pro, and all lettering except for the main title was done in SketchBook Pro.
