[He had finished his cigarette in a matter of moments, resisting the urge to urge to reach for another. Irial didn't doubt that Niall would come, and faery speed being what it was, Irial left the roof and started down the stairs, anticipating his guest even as the door creaked open]

Niall. [Irial confirmed, taking his time with the steps, drawing it out as if to be irritating, though it was easier this way, slow and careful movement that did not upset his balance]

[His eyes went almost immediately to the injury on Irial's stomach. Time was not linear here, he recognized that. Had the injury come sometime before Irial had been here, or in the month since then? If they were the only two faeries here it was difficult for Niall to imagine anyone here had been able to injure Irial. Even if he wasn't King, he was very powerful.

After closing the door behind him he stood there, not moving for now. And he was irritated by Irial but that wasn't new]

What cut you?

Your warm welcome. [Irial replied, brow raised. It was not quite the reception he expected, if he allowed himself to expect anything at all. The new Dark King was as mercurial as he was beautiful. Like his scars, his temper tried to conceal a gentleness, but Irial saw past it. The ability to taste the other faery's emotion only confirmed what he would have already suspected, that Niall was not quite the thug he liked to represent himself as, especially now that he had gained the power of his Court]

[As usual Irial's mere presence caused a war of emotions in him. Despite everything, and everything in this case really was so much, Niall couldn't help being affected by him. That fact alone always gave him a spark of anger, and annoyance. Irial's pretty face was enough to make Niall tense.]

I should know if there is something here that could threaten us. Me.

If you would like to order me on a fact-finding mission for you, my liege, so be it. [His voice was rich with sarcasm, his own irritation sparking at the way Niall was addressing him - or rather, discarding him. But at the same time, the Dark King's anger was a strange pleasure, which is why he admittedly provoked him given the chance.

[In contrast to the sting of his words, Irial smiled as he descended the stairs, his fingertips trailing along the banister, secretly spotting himself should his body sway. Fortunately, it did not and the dark faery stood at the bottom of the landing, gesturing for Niall to sit if that was his wish] My house is yours.

I didn't ask to be your King. [It was a softly spoken reminder, belying the frustration and anger caused by Irial's sarcasm. Denying the concern and care he felt for Irial was easier than addressing it. It always had been, since their parting so long ago.

As Niall finally moved, using the back of the couch to lean against rather than sit on it properly, he was reminded of the conversation they'd had. The fact Irial now knew about that care was disturbing. He still hadn't wrapped his mind around it, about the implications of it.]

And such titles seem a bit meaningless here.

Perhaps not, to be a King without your Court. [But to be without the demands of it for an indefinite period of time, that must be a relief. Perhaps Irial had more idea than Niall of what that was like, as Niall barely seemed to have embraced the title, which was not the case in the present Irial had departed from; further proof that his King was not aware of many things, perhaps whole months of time that he had not experienced before arriving here]

[As Niall leaned against his couch, Irial let his body relax against the stairwell, one arm held at his side, the other casually draped across his stomach] There are a number of people here who are not human, and possess the Sight. [It was a warning, of sorts. There were still dangers here, and they were not so cloaked in this world as they were accustomed to]

[Niall would have to be cautious then. He had already met at least one person who had recognized him, not something he was used to. In so many centuries only recently was the idea of non-faery seeing him something he'd experienced. He assumed it was the same for Irial.]

And how have you been conducting yourself without a King? [it was almost a joke, or it would have been if Niall didn't seem quite so interested in the answer]

[Irial smiled in answer to the question, not sure how much honesty Niall was really interested in hearing. The raw truth would set him off; a half-lie would achieve much the same. And so the dark faery softened his mouth and glanced away, refraining from a proper answer. He did not wish to explain himself to his new King, and he did not have the strength to fight him]

You were here before. Clearly, you don't remember it. Some people don't. But I do.

[That caught his attention, and he stared at Irial for a long moment. He silently willed Irial to explain himself or at least look back at him. When neither happened he was forced to ask.]

What do you mean? I was here in Somarium?

[Disturbing that. To think he had interacted with Irial in some way and couldn't remember it. He wanted to, he tried to. Niall found nothing there, and it made him even more tense. His body was practically coiled with it, his breathing erratic]

Yes. A month, maybe two over the summer. You left before I did. [Irial relayed the information faithfully, though he glanced back at Niall, amusement in his eyes, his tongue touching his lower lip, savoring the taste]

[Niall pushed off from the couch and paced, moving in a random direction and back again, his hands coming up to tangle in his hair for a moment as he tried to calm himself. This was affecting him, a lot. What had he done? What had he and Irial done? Had he told him any secrets? Had Irial told him any secrets? He doubted there was any way to find out now. On the rare occasion Irial could be forthright, but it was indeed rare, and Niall didn't want a fight either.]

Anything else I should know?

Not just now. [Irial replied, watching him pace with interest, enjoying the restless energy of the Dark Court King prowling about his usually vacant living room. Even irritable company was still company. It had been a lonely couple weeks, fighting to heal and staying away from the temptation of Somarium's citizens]

[Niall slowed his pacing as he neared Irial, and he stopped. He stared at the former King for a long moment, longer than a human would find comfortable. His eyes dropped then back down to the knife wound. His anger peaked again, momentarily obscuring his concern]

Is that something I should be concerned about? Will you tell me who did it?

[Irial met Niall's glance, his own eyes unblinking and unwavering until the Dark King lowered his eyes to the raw, roughly healed scar where the blades had pierced him. He deliberated answering the second question; the first he didn't consider for a moment. After several moments of heavy silence, Irial conceded]

Bananach.
