[he had been going around, trying to keep everyone back when a flash of movement caught his eye. seeing the girl run-("Wait!")-and being the closest, he went after her. he had to go that way, anyway, and there were plenty of officers already here. of course he called to a few of the ones that were still milling around dazed back to attention to continue where he was abruptly leaving off.

Hold it-stop! [and just going to be grabbing Kay from behind, his arms under hers as he tried to pull her away. fortunately a few other officers had heard the commotion and was helping.

they already had one casualty, he didn't need someone else being sent to the hospital or things getting worse.]

[and leaving her alone, he goes over to consult with the other officers. they were able to do some preliminary investigation, and after a few minutes Kid returns to tell Kay.]

As I thought, the man is not the suspect. He is one of the servers and was helping with carving the meat. The blood on his clothes and knife are confirmed to be of such, and there are several witnesses who can place him at the tables at the time of the murder.
