For being so cheerful normally, Katsu had slipped into something of a blasé demeanor, mood darkened by the half-light of the sky outside and the dimness of the rooms inside, where it was safe. His Pokémon helped, but he could see that they, too, had grown somewhat depressed in the short time they'd been here. They wanted grass and fields to play in, trees to climb, water to splash. Here, there was only dust and death ( ... )

Startled by the sound and voice, Ahime jerked straight and promptly tried to banish the tears, succeeding for the time being. She sniffled and quickly rubbed the sleeve of her baggy cardigan over her eyes and face, turning with a clearly faked smile on her stained features ( ... )

Katsu only held her eyes for a second before glancing away, Absol looking up at his trainer and edging closer, earning a hand on his head for the trouble.

"I... miss home, too," he offered softly. "If there was a way to get here, there has to be a way to get back. We just have to look until we find it. That's as good a hope as any, right?" He looked up at her and tried a smile, even though his own sorrow-reddened eyes were shining with tears. "And... if we look together, we'll have an even better chance of finding it."

Ahime swallowed visibly, the lump in her throat feeling like shards of glass on her insides. Tears burned like acid, and she jerked her head away quickly, teeth running over her trembling lower lip.

She hadn't told him. So far only Toy knew the truth about her own world, that her failure - the failure of the warriors - meant that home no longer was an option for her. She didn't want to do that to him on the off chance that it could possibly dash what little hope was keeping him sane, for she knew the creeping sensation of breaking sanity all too well at that point. She wouldn't - couldn't - willingly put some one else through that kind of pain.

But it was facing her, right then, in his hopeful words and tired, watery gaze, and try as she might the sobs and the trembles and shakes just wouldn't be held down.

"You have a home to search for, Katsu. That's not a luxury I have any more. You can search, if you really think there's a way for you to get home, because I wouldn't want to be stuck here either if there was another option. But ( ... )

He deflated slightly at that, wondering what she could be talking about. Did that mean their homes had been destroyed? Could they never actually go back? Did everyone really...?

He swallowed hard, and tried, with forced optimism, again. "But... everyone at home isn't here, are they? They have to be somewhere, don't they? They can't have just..." His voice trailed off, too shaky to continue. His home. His family. His friends. Jeremy. They couldn't all be gone.

He slumped against the wall, legs like jelly, only his locked knees keeping him from sliding to the ground. Absol stood close, ready to help his trainer if it came to that, but Katsu managed to stay standing, hands clenched together in an ill-fated attempt to keep them from shaking.
