01. It is SUCH a beautiful day today! The weather has been crap for a solid week now, and any nice weather we've had in the last few months has stayed around for a few days at most and then run into hiding again. Which is infuriating to me, a summer lover. So after work I walked straight past my house and jaunted around for a good 30 minutes, ( Read more... )

Yay pretty days and fellow summer lovers!

-sends general thoughts of encouragement-

We do have Kit Kat and Smarties (I liked to call them "medicine" because of the way they look), but I've never seen any of the candies on your list. The area I live in has a nice mix of European, Asian, and Mexican goods and candies, but not Canadian...

What you lot call Smarties, we call Rockets (look like little pastel pills, fun to turn into powder). Our Smarties are like M&Ms, but the shell is thicker and the chocolate a bit different.

Oh. Oops.

-is not skilled in the ways of the Canadian-

We have shrimp chips! I don't like them, but my mom and some of my friends do!

No worries. I guess I should have clarified, but I figured the American Smarties candy wouldn't be a 'chocolate bar', but maybe you guys have less distinct categories (since you do call them 'candy bars').

Ewwww! Normal potato chips that are shrimp flavoured? I'll have to try them!

It's 30 degrees in my room right now. :( (That translates to almost 90 degrees American.)

*bugs in* I haven't read all comments, so forgive me if I say stuff that's already been said.

In Canada (no clue if they're American or Canadian) treats I loved were:

Oh Henry, Maple Sirup (very original... not), Maple cookies, Mr. Big, Caramilk, Hickory Sticks, Dare Banana cookies, Gobstoppers and Nerds.

Hope it helps... a bit.

Thanks! I've never heard of the banana cookies before! Someone else suggested maple cookies, and they're a fabulous idea! They're delish, I just never thought about them being a Canadian thing before - though of course they are! I have a big thing of maple syrup that I'm bringing down, and if I see some maple sugar or maple candies before I go I'll pick some of those up too!

Did you ever eat dulse in NS by the way? That's a snack food in Atlantic Canada of dried seaweed. It's very yummy and healthy!

No I haven't had those. But you remind me, there was this other candy I ate LOADS of in NS I just forgot the name of it >.< They were small and sticky and had colorful wrappers around them. God, why can't I remember their names? I loved them and you could find them all around Halifax in the touristy stores...

Force them to have vinegar on their french fries...:P

And the chocolate bar thing is just sad...I mean...no Smarties OR Crispy Crunch??? THE HORROR!!!

Is that known as a Canadian thing? I know a few people who do that, though most still use ketchup. My best friend uses mayonnaise, something she picked up in Europe. They have much better mayonnaise than we do though.

I know!! Such sad, sad lives they lead without those pleasures. ;) I can't believe they don't have Mars bars any longer!! I used to like eating those frozen.

It is a known Canadian thing actually. If you go to a restaurant there (a place with fries obviously) and request vinegar, apparently they automatically know you're Canadian because they don't use it (just ketchup apparently).

And I've had mayo on my fries before, it's not bad actually...but I like mustard the best. (Seriously, I really do it's awesome)

Huh. That's interesting. I hate vinegar on my fries, but I know plenty of friends who do it. Thanks! (Mustard would be interesting, but I don't like that either!)

Kit Kats - through my entire childhood, there was one kind of Kit Kat, and it was four small milk chocolate bars attached together (you can break them apart, hence the slogan "break me off a piece of that kit kat bar"). In the last few years, they've come out with a few more varieties, like a dark and white chocolate version. Also, they've recently come out with a "Big" Kit Kat. It's probably the same weight as a traditional Kit Kat, but it's one big bar rather than 4 small ones, closer to the size of a Snickers or Milky Way ( ... )

We have the same Kit Kats here, with all the varieties. I saw them in Houston last summer too.

We call your Smarties "Rockets" and I don't like them that much. Regular Smarties are much better! ;)

Yes! Try the Coffee Crisp and let me know what you think! It was my favourite chocolate bar in grad school.

Someone else said that about Cadbury. I think I'll pick up some extra Cadbury stuff. Incidentally, I've been to the Hershey factory in Pennsylvania! It's kinda creepy - it and the whole town.

The results are in, and I like Coffee Crisp! It's pretty light and mild, which is good. Sometimes I'm in the mood for some candy, but I don't want a huge nougat-y and caramel-y sugar high. I have an M&M dispenser (looks like a gumball machine) at my desk for real chocolate, but the Coffee Crisp is a good alternative.

LOL @ at the Hershey creepiness. You don't like the giant man-in-a-Hershey-bar-costume that walks around? The amusement park is pretty nice, the factory tour is lame because it's just some goofy animatronics. Back in the day, you got a tour of a REAL chocolate factory, and that was probably better.

I'm glad you like it!

Yeah, we didn't see the real factory at all.
