I was teaching a seminar this week along with one of my senior colleagues whose course it is. At the end of his lecture on media theory (which was a whistle-stop tour from Adorno to Jenkins) he very briefly mentioned fan vids - it was a one sentence comment about Star Trek slash (although he didn't call it that). I've presented some of my preliminary research at two academic media conferences now, and some of this has included a discussion of fan vids (I'm also doing activist videos and community videos for my research), and I really don't think most people get what fan vids are (in spite of me actually showing one, with permission of the producer).
