Fan vids and a general audience

I've presented some of my preliminary research at two academic media conferences now, and some of this has included a discussion of fan vids (I'm also doing activist videos and community videos for my research), and I really don't think most people get what fan vids are (in spite of me actually showing one, with permission of the producer). It's very tough to get across without the time. I remember the first 24/7 conference - the fan vid session that Cesca did was excellent as she had time to show over 10 vids and give context but when it came to the summary collection of video works fan vids and amvs were the hardest to contextualise unless they were clearly parody.

For me, this aspect of fan vids is actually part of their depth but getting that comprehension across...

When it comes to fan vids I'm often reminded of that scene in Rocky Horror where Frankenfurter is displaying his newly created Rocky and Janet opines that she doesn't like men with too many muscles. "I didn't make him for you!"

That's what makes fan vids hard, I think. Not that all academics are Brad and Janet - they are certainly more open minded than that - but sometimes it's hard to appreciate things until you put on the stockings. Perhaps I've taken this metaphor too far :)
