Jacqui Franco was quite sure she was losing her mind.
Sure, Vegas had the Strip, but that, that was nothing compared to this, and she wasn't even out of the airport yet. She could only imagine what it would be like once she was outside, actually in New York City-oh God. She caught sight of a tiny gift shop, stuffed to the gills with sweatshirts for 'LaGuardia’, and suddenly felt embarrassed by the space between ‘La’ and ‘Guardia’ that had appeared in all her planning emails with Jane.
She was pretty sure it was a sign from God, and he was saying something like, ‘Haha! You thought you could be happy? Heck no, this isn’t some romantic movie. Now get back on a plane and go home. I’ll put some Ben and Jerry’s in your fridge.”
She might be projecting a bit, but she’s pretty sure that’s what God’s thinking. She hopes God is also thinking about smiting Archie, who’s fault it is that she’s there anyway.
---
"I owe you forever Archie, and I promise, I will never put you in this position again."
"Jacqui. Please. You can put me in this position any time you want," Archie grinned, typing furiously. "Helping sane and sensible Jacqui Franco fly across the country to chase the man she loves? I love this."
"I'm so glad my pain and misery is amusing you. Wait, what’s he saying?” She pushed Archie’s chair out of the way, squinting at the tiny text on the laptop screen. “It was my fault! Archie! Tell him I’m not mad at him, that it was my stupid fault and I’m really sorry and I only wanted-”
“-Jacqui. You realize you will have to move before I can tell him anything, right?”
---
Her cell phone was ringing. She fumbled with it slightly, adjusting the strap of her purse nervously.
“Hello?”
“Hello, Jacqui?”
“Yes. Is this Jane?”
“Yes. I’ll assume your flight’s landed on time then?”
“Yeah, I just got off the plane.”
“Good, good. I’m waiting by the baggage carousel. I’ve got a little sign with your name and everything. You can’t miss me.”
Well, Jacqui sighed minutes later, as she zoned in on a blond woman who had to be Jane. She was right about the not being able to miss her part. Jane was holding a sign that proclaimed ‘FRANCO, JACQUI’ to the world. She waved, and Jane waved back almost frantically, nearly upsetting her cup of coffee-
Jacqui was almost directly in front of Jane before she realized. If Jane was waving, and holding coffee, then who was holding the si-
The sign dropped along with her stomach as Adam appeared from behind it.
"He forced it out of me, I'm afraid." Jane’s voice was regretful, but her smile told a different story. She barely knew this woman, yet Jacqui was already sure that they would be good friends once she got over the urge to kill her. Right now though, she had other things on her mind. Like the way Adam was staring at her, chewing on his bottom lip like a piece of gum.
"Jacq, hear me out, please, I didn't-"
"Adam James Ross!” She snapped suddenly, and he winced. “Don't you even dare think about apologizing. Especially when I'm the one who messed everything up."
He gaped at her. “What are you talking about?”
“Angela. I talked with my sister the other day, she’s getting married again, her third time, and basically the only reason she’s getting married is because she doesn’t like being alone, and I realized Adam, I realized-”
She couldn’t do this. She wouldn’t. Jacqui Franco did not cry. And if she cried in front of Adam she was sure word would get back to Archie somehow, and then it would be all over the lab by lunchtime that she was getting soft-
“Jacqui…”
“I thought you deserved better than a weekend here and there, and I felt like I was using you to keep me happy-I didn’t want to be the one, the thing that was keeping you from, from having, having that…”
Shit. She’s got the hiccups. Whenever she’s about to cry, she gets the hiccups, and if she starts crying she’ll never get to finish explaining-
“Jacqui Jacqui Jacqui…”
She shut her eyes as she felt his arms wrap around her tightly. “I just wanted you to be happy.”
“You nerd,” Adam muttered into her hair, squeezing her tighter. “How could I be happy without you?”
