A/N: This was supposed to be for the AU challenge at ncis_flashfic, but it went from rather AU to just...Tony getting hired. ^^

“This is ridiculous.”

Gibbs sighed, trying (and failing) not to listen to the man behind him complain about the wait. They had been standing in this line for almost ten minutes now, by no fault of the teller; the woman at the window had been arguing with the teller about how her card was declined since before he’d gotten in line.

Of course, it was pretty ridiculous, but he didn’t have the time nor the energy to argue the case, with either the woman in front of him or the man at his six. It had been a long day, and all he wanted to do was deposit his check and possibly get a pizza on his way home.

It was when the kid started repeating himself that Gibbs felt his shoulders tense.

“This is ridiculous,” He repeated, turning to smile at the two women behind him. “Absolutely ridiculous…”

“Excuse me,” Gibbs turned around finally, sending a glare straight at him. “You complaining is not going to make the line move any faster.”

“It’s not making it any slower, now, is it?” The man grinned cheekily, just seconds before a hand connected with the back of his head. “HEY!”

Gibbs shrugged as he started to turn around again. “Sorry. Force of habit.”

“You’re lucky I’m off the clock,” He frowned, tapping the badge on his belt. “Assaulting a police officer is a crime, you know. I could take you in right now.”

“Really? You’re a police officer?”

“Detective, actually.”

Gibbs reached in his back pocket, pulling out his own badge. “Federal agent. Gibbs, NCIS.”

“NCIS?” The man squinted at the badge, his face brightening suddenly. “Hey! I’ve heard of you guys!”

Gibbs was too taken aback by the comment to comment.

“I’m sorry, let me introduce myself. Tony DiNozzo. BA in physical education, Ohio State, graduated and moved on to the force in Peoria for two years, then Philly for eighteen months, twenty-two months in Baltimore, and I’ve been in DC for about a year now-”

“There a reason you’re giving me your life story?” Gibbs glanced behind him, at the woman who was still arguing.

“Well, I’ve been thinking about maybe…maybe it would be a nice place to work.”

That got his attention. Gibbs tried not to gape at Tony.

“Look, Mr. DiNozzo-”

“Tony. My name is Tony. Call me Tony, please.”

“Tony,” Gibbs sighed. “If you’re thinking about joining NCIS, go fill out an application, go through the process. I’m not exactly in the habit of hiring people I’ve known less than an hour.”

“But see, I’m trying to build a rapport with you before I apply, because they say it’s a good idea to let people know what you’re like before-”

“All I know is that you are annoying the Hell out of me when all I want to do is get out of this God damned line.”

“No, see, you know now that I’m the kinda guy who would take advantage of every opportunity! I’m a go-getter, I work hard, I’m persistent! That’s a good thing, right?” He turned to the girl behind him. “Don’t I seem like a guy you’d want to hire?”

“I’d hire you.” The girl answered, a slight giggle in her voice.

“Thank you-” He started to turn back to Gibbs, but spun on his heels all the way around. “Hi, my name’s Tony DiNozzo, and you are…?”

“Sarah.”

“Well, Ms. Sarah-you are a miss, yes? I’m very pleased to make your aquaintAH!” He spun around again, glaring at Gibbs, who was looking slightly pleased with himself. “Okay, the first time? I was a bit of a smart-ass, I admit. But what was that for?”

“You better get used to them, DiNozzo,” Gibbs breathed a silent sigh of relief as the woman in front of him finally moved away from the teller. “According to my last agent, they were a pretty big part of my ‘motivational’ techniques.”

“Used to them?” Tony grinned, and Gibbs was almost certain he saw the man’s ears perk up. “Does this mean I’m-”

“Bring your resume to NCIS headquarters by 0800 Monday. I’ll interview you then.”

“Thank you sir!”

“Do not call me sir.”

“…yes Boss!”

Gibbs mustered up a smile for the teller, inwardly cursing himself. This Tony kid was either going to be a great success…or a colossal failure. Glancing back at Tony, watching him flirt with the Sarah girl, Gibbs couldn’t help but think that he might possibly end up with a bit of both.
