Darn. So much for that. "Fine then. I can figure this out on my own. It'll be no problem for my amazing genius!" Orange Kid boasted.
The thing must have an on switch somewhere. But, so far as he could tell, it was featureless other than the eyes and mouth. Maybe it was voice activated? Worth a shot. "Uh... I am Orange Kid. I command you to wake up and... do something." Orange Kid waited for a reaction, but it didn't seem to be doing anything.
Maybe one of the eyes had some kind of hidden switch on it or something? Orange Kid lightly tapped on one of the eyes. Again, no reaction. Perhaps it required more force. So Orange Kid punched it this time. Which only resulted in him nearly breaking his hand. "Ow ow OW!!! Stupid machine, work already!!" Orange Kid shouted at it, before a delivering a forceful kick to to Smelter out of rage.
The projects around the room began to shake. A little at first, and then a lot.
If Orange Kid looked around, he'd be able to see that the mechas were getting up. Not only them, but two of the metallic students were waking up as well!
Smelter let out a mechanical groan as sparks began to fly out of it. Whatever Orange Kid had done, it sure did a lot. Smelter started shaking violently, the mechanical groan getting louder, sparks becoming more numerous, as the mechas woke up and all looked at Orange Kid.
"Ah, success! The machine has finally started up! Now I can-" Orange Kid looked back. That other student was gone now. How rude! Still, at least now he could get started with his work. Except, something seemed off. He could hear the dramatic music tell that something was very wrong. Orange Kid had never seen Smelter spark like that during class and were those robots looking at him and oh god this is not good. Orange Kid turned around and started running as fast as he could.
The mechas and the two mecha students chased after Orange Kid, but after getting outside did not see him. They spread out and began looking for something to destroy.

The eyes opened and closed. Again. And again. And again.
And, suddenly, without warning....
