The medical department were extremely efficient in getting the heavily injured Exorcist to the infirmary but…
“You can walk can you?” asked a nurse who stayed behind to look at Sera who had already slumped against the wall. “We have the disinfectant back in the medical wing, but can you take the walk there?”
Sera nodded. “Yuuka, I supported that guy from the battlefield back to the Finder and back here. I can take a bit more.”
Allen immediately tried to offer to help but was declined. “Thanks Allen, but you should be resting until you can do back to work, not help injured people.” Sera tried standing up but her current condition refused to allow her body to listen to commands. Two arms caught her before she fell back onto the ground.
“But you don’t expect me to stand and watch while a comrade has trouble walking do you?” Allen said while Melody pulled Sera upright and caught her shoulder to keep her upright. Allen took the other side. “We’ll take it from here Miyazaki,” he said to the nurse.
The first sense that came back to him was hearing. He heard Sera’s voice first. Then the moyashi’s. And finally the voice of one of the nurses he knew from the medical department. Then he heard the stretcher being rolled over the uneven stone floor.
The second sense was touch. He felt himself being lifted from Sera and transferred to a softer, horizontal bed. Then he heard the voice of another girl. He recognized it as one o the nurses who worked in the infirmary. She was Japanese too, but she was from another country. He felt the bed being pushed across the uneven texture of the floor. Then it was darkness again as his body fixed all his injuries.
When he woke up, he did not count on seeing the light filter in from a window. Neither did he count on his body being bandaged so much that he resembled a mummy. He did, however, expect the scene that came from none other than…
“SERA!!” The said girl stormed into the partition that separated Kanda’s bed from the rest of the ward. Without his uniform or shirt on, Sera had nothing to grab onto. Instead, she aimed for the loosest part of the bandages around his chest. With surprising strength, she jerked him up until his face was level with hers.
“What the HELL did you think you tried to do back then? Act a hero in front of him?” she demanded. “Or perhaps you thought you were trying to save my ass back then?”
Allen and Melody rushed in and pried Sera’s hands off while the nurse arrived and told them to take her away. Melody pushed Sera out while saying “You can kill him later but you need to let the cuts heal first.”
“Let me kill him after you’re done Yuuka!!” the irate Exorcist shouted from beyond the partitioned area.
The nurse with Kanda sighed a little. “You know the Head Nurse doesn’t allow spilling of blood here, Sera,” she said loudly as she readjusted Kanda’s bandages. “You can vent out your anger on the punching bag upstairs.”
An aggravated sigh was heard and stomping could be heard fading slightly until a yelp of pain and a rather loud thump. Kanda rolled his eyes. The stupid girl did not even bother to treat those major cuts on her legs and arms and just exerted them to their limits. He glanced at the nurse beside him. The name on the uniform said YUUKA MIYAZAKI. “You can go to her outside,” he said as he struggled to get up after Yuuka was done. “I’ll be ok after a while.” Another nurse came by and spoke to Yuuka in a low tone. Yuuka glanced back at Kanda before hurrying out.
Yuuka wrapped clean white bandages around the no-longer bleeding ankles. “You better get a change of clothes,” she told the patient as she got up. She noted the cracks on the metal rings Seras’s upper half legs. “And they look badly damaged. You might wanna get Ray to look at them.” Sera glanced at the rings on her bandaged hands as well. And sighed.
“Ray gets the kick out of breaking them first,” she mumbled. “Melody?”
The other Exorcist nodded and the duo left the room. Yuuka kept the things safely and was about to head back to the main office when Kanda brushed past her.
“Kanda!! You’re not supposed to be moving,” she said while trying to get the other Japanese back. Kanda stopped and looked back.
“I’m fine. I need to go to Komui’s office. That girl is in no condition to be giving the report,” was his reason. He turned and left before Yuuka could say anything.
Melody waited outside the room. A few people passed by and greeted her a little. And here comes another one.
“Hi Palson,” said the passerby. It was a woman, wearing a white coat. But the name tag said she was not from the Science department though. “Free today?”
“My scythe is being repaired,” Melody replied. “The handle broke after I smashed a few buildings consecutively. Why’re you asking, Streak? Don’t you have phone calls to attend to?”
The woman, Streak deliberately looked away. “Well… There aren’t many today,” she answered a little too happily. “Just a flood of paperwork.”
Melody wished that Sera would hurry up. “I swear, whatever virus Komui’s been infecting you guys within the Diplomatic department, needs to be cured fast.” The door opened. Melody was mentally relieved. At least she was not talking to another coffee addict anymore. Komui was bad enough. Sera was wearing a slightly oversized blue shirt and shorts so that the rings for flying would be removed easily.
“Hey Streak,” she said when she saw the Diplomatic. “Flooding?”
Streak gave a wicked smile. “Drowning.”
“Fish you up?”
“Nope, I wanna fly.”
“Ok. Maybe later when I drop by.” With that Sera gestured for Melody to go. Once they were safely out of view, Melody turned to Sera.
“Were you saying codes?” she hissed.
Sera nodded and kept walking. “It’s a way to really talk to Streak,” she said. Walking down the numerous steps, she continued, “I sometimes think the Diplomats are a bit too stressed from handling all that talking and correspondence. And so they have a habit to speaking weird. But if you get to know how it works, then it’s rather easy to speak their style. Oh, here we are.”
They stopped in front of a large door. Pushing the door open, they were greeted to a chaotic scene. Papers were strewn nearly everywhere while people in white coats were running back and forth. One of them saw the two girls standing there.
“Melody!! Your scythe is done. Komui sent it back for fine tuning,” he said. “Ray has it but if you manage to get to his desk…” He hardly got to finish his sentence when Reever shouted at him to get his butt back to work.
Weaving through the massive sea of white papers was not easy. When they finally reached Ray’s desk, Sera’s bare legs were covered in paper cuts. A man with red hair and the familiar white coat was bent over a large weapon sprawled out on an adjoining table. He looked up when they squeezed past a couple of stacks of papers.
“Hey Melody, it’s done,” he said. “Want to test it out?” He saw Sera next. “Sera! You’re back! And what happened to your Innocence?!?”
He glared at her after spotting the critical flaws in the largest metal rings. Sera showed him the cracked rings on her hands as well. “Sorry Ray, could you fix these?” she asked as she removed all the rings. Melody picked up her scythe and tested with it while Ray analysed Sera’s Innocence.
“It’ll take a few days for Komui to finish fixing them and about half a day to fine tune,” he said. “Supervisor’s not gonna be happy… Speaking of which you two should go see him now. How is it Melody?”
Melody swung the scythe back to her shoulder. “It’s fine,” she said. “I can go back to work again. Let’s go.”
Kanda knocked the door twice and pushed it open. The room was cluttered as always. Someone should give Komui a quota of work to be completed each day. The said Supervisor was on the phone again. He sat down on the sofa and waited for the other to finish talking.
After a while, Komui finally put the phone back into its holder. “Oh Kanda, what bring you here,” Komui directed his attention to the serious Exorcist on the sofa. “I heard about it though. You saw him. Just like Allen described previously.”
Kanda nodded. “He doesn’t remember anything it seems. He stared at the black coat like it was new to him. But still, he used his hammer. Why hasn’t the Innocence rejected him yet?”
Komui’s expression turned dead serious. “Hevlaska came up with a theory about that one after hearing the report from the Finder. She said that Lavi’s memories are being surpressed, but his Innocence knows that his becoming of a Noah is not his choice to begin with. Therefore the Innocence remained, hoping he would recover his memories and remember.”
Kanda cursed. “That bastard Earl… I don’t know how to remove a memory spell. I’m not trained in magic arts.”
A soft knock sounded. Komui shouted a ‘Hold on please’ before continuing to speak to Kanda. “One of the Generals here, Cross Marian, is trained in magic arts, but I doubt you can ask him for help. He’s been uncontactable for some time now. There’s Bookman and Mark you might be able to ask though.”
“Got it,” Kanda said as he got up and headed for the door. He saw both girls standing outside. “… What’re you doing here?”
Sera crossed her arms. “If you’re going somewhere please don’t block the door,” she said. Opening the other door, she walked in quickly with Melody following behind. Kanda said nothing but left.
Sera dumped her rings onto the messy desk. “It’s not durable at all,” Sera bit out while trying to keep her volume level down. “If I’m going to have to fight a Noah, my Innocence is going to break first before landing a critical hit.”
Komui pushed the chair back a little. “Well… you were abusing them if they were able to break…,” he said. “Besides, both of you are here, which is perfect.” He pulled out two identical folders and handed them over. “Once your Innocence is fixed I want you both to go Jamaica for an extermination mission. There might be Innocence there but the Finder hasn’t reported any phenomenon in the area yet.”
Melody’s face lit up. “We’re BOTH going on the same mission?” she repeated. “Sweet!! That’s the third time I get to go with Sera. So think you can hurry up with Sera’s rings?”
“I’ll try,” Komui said a little too happily. He took the cracked metal rings from his desk. “Hmm…”
Sera gave him a pointed look. “No funny things with my Innocence,” she warned before leaving. She vaguely heard a ‘That took the fun out of it Sera…” as they left the office.
