It was San Diego Comic-Con, and yes! There was a sequence where he was dealing with some robbers in a dark alley and quipping up a storm. Most of the clips were much lighter in tone than that trailer shows. And despite Emma Stone's unfortunate MJ-bashing on SNL (which she certainly didn't write), she and Andrew had a couple of meet-cute scenes that made me hopeful.

I wonder why none of the quippy bits made it into the trailer? Maybe "Spider-Man is supposed to be funny" has faded from the pop cultural landscape. :(

Well on the positive side, in race related casting on the Hunger Games. Cinna is played by Lenny Kravitz, who's black.

(which still thrills me, because Gary Ross broke the white as default rule on that one, meaning that hopefully we could get a poc casting for characters like Johanna and hey (I can hope right), Finnick or Bogs or Coin or... you know any of the other characters who's skin colour isn't mentioned in the books) as well. (still say that with the description of Finnick he could just as easily be Asian or Hawaian.)

What can I say, I'm just happy, he didn't go with the white British guy for Cinna, like so many of the fans seemed to think of Cinna as.

You're right! I'm really excited about that, and it's probably a bit unfair of me not to mention it in discussing the race issues around the casting. On the other hand, I'm not sure casting PoC for a truly race neutral role outweighs whitewashing roles in which racial politics really do have an affect. :/

For some reason, Garfield has yet to click with me as Peter at all. I really hope he changes my mind in the actual movie, but for now, I'm underwhelmed by him in general.

I actually really loved Toby Maguire, both in terms of looks and acting, in the first movie. Unfortunately, after that his age seemed to catch up with him at lightning speed, so it got weirder and weirder.

I thought Tobey was great in the role (insofar as the script let him be great -- it's not his fault there was so little quipping, which was his main weakness), but lookswise he always seemed faintly off. The costume design didn't help, because the mask made his chin look really strange and I was completely distracted by that whenever Spidey had a scene.

My issue with Garfield, on reflection, might be that the brief snippets we see of his performance makes him seem like the wrong kind of maladjusted loner -- not bright-eyed geek who's at a loss in social situations, but slightly sullen brooder who doodles sketches in his composition notebooks. (Not that the latter can't be geeky, but it's not Peter Parker geeky.) The clothing style and the skateboard don't really help there.
