Well, we’ve certainly been through some dark and unsettling times, haven’t we? [A slight chuckle, then a pause as though suddenly realizing insensitivity --] Ah, my condolences to those who have lost loved ones during these last few weeks. I am truly very sorry; these recent occurrences are not experiences I would wish upon anyone ( Read more... )

Oh, this is nothing. Last summer there was an earthquake, I think a 6-something, that messed so much more up. There was a huge city-wide riot back in August. Now that was fun. Not to mention that this is totally not the first string of rampant murders.

But the cultists? Well, they're new.

Ah, my apologies, I've only arrived in Autumn and hadn't heard of any the disasters that had occurred before my arrival here. It is rather concerning to hear that this really isn't anything new.

[Oh, he certainly has his own opinions on the cultists, but ... best not to mention that.]

Did those past events also disable the city's electricity grid, or was last month's incident the first time?

What can you do? It's a big city. Not to mention, it's full of people with super powers. But this? This is nothing compared to where I come from.

[She exhales and hums as she thinks.]

Nothing this big? At least not in the past year or so. The earthquake knocked out power in some places, and there's been power outages here and there because of the usual, normal things. Nothing that lasted more than an hour or so, though.

If you're that worried about all this, invest in a backup generator?

Oh, I'm not worried about it for my own personal reasons -- all I need is a battery-powered desk lamp to brighten up my evening's work! [a slight chuckle, pleased with his own humor] It's just a particularly worrisome situation for the city in general.

I'm almost positive the city's energy isn't sourced directly by the Core, and that it was a matter of the Core's interference with the existing power grid. Otherwise, the core's location would not have been a mystery to the public for so long.

Aside from the imports, the city is entirely self-sufficient...which amazes me too, considering the unrest.

I think the main lesson to be learned here is not the interfere recklessly with the most volition piece of equipment on the island- but also that ensuring its stability and correcting any malfunction should also be a top priority. However, the Core cannot simply be tampered and tinkered with. It needs very delicate handling, and a better idea of what we're dealing with. That the city is content to just lock it off and sit on it does seem outrageous.

Ah, yes, the Core's location was only discovered in November. I remember that particular set of riots -- travelling to work had even become quite dangerous for a while! And indeed, I agree that letting it be is overlooking the vast research opportunities that could be gained from closer examination. While nothing may come of it, nothing is certainly going to come from simply ignoring a device that is responsible for altering the dimensional threads and bringing life to this city!

[Well, all right, perhaps tinkering it with could have severe negative consequences, but not only would that be buying into AGI propoganda, it wouldn't really be a bad resolution to their situation. A pity that they could not examine it more closely, but not bad. Once the novelty of living in this world had worn off, Ikutsuki was sure he was going to see it was just like the one he had left behind -- or even worse.]

Yet...I suppose people can't help being afraid. It takes brave men to confront the world and the way it works, then try to understand it.

The understanding must come before trying to force any change- which I believe is the step many seem to be skipping over, in their heads.

In any case, proceeding with due caution would be better than doing nothing at all. For all we know, the core could be deteriorating on its own.

And a catastrophe could occur as a result of such inaction?

Ikutsuki, you are still here. I was getting worried.

[Sunny smiles.]

Energy sources haven't advanced all the much by my time, so I'm not sure there's much I could do to help. Even if someone were willing to listen to a little girl.

[Notice anything different?]

[She's not stuttering! C:]

Ah, hello, there, Sunny! No, no, I've just been quiet over the network lately. Researching. Haven't had anything that I needed to ask. You've already created a great many things for a girl your age -- I don't expect anyone would think you would know about energy on top of all that ... do you?

[She's still so excited about that.]

No, but I can learn. It would probably take awhile though.

Well, I do suppose it's never too early to start studying!
