What's the first rule of gardening? The heat is subsiding so I don't think anything will die within a day of being planted, but I'd still like to know regardless. I've never grown anything before, at least not seriously; I've heard that homegrown vegetables are better than the junk bought at supermarkets because you don't have to worry about ( Read more... )

Not for tonight, no. We have to fatten him up first.

Fine, I'll be patient.

If you're that hungry, I could use some leftover frozen pork to make a stew or porkchops.

Alternatively, eat a hotdog.

[You had Ivy at "gardening".]

Naturally, homegrown vegetables are better than the genetically modified ones sold commercially, when it comes to consumption. But from the sounds of it, you're not really sure of what to grow. What is it that you're interested in?

[She normally wasn't this helpful, but she'd prefer that one would be responsible, when it came to plants.]

[he can even tell just by her voice that she's beautiful. must be his lucky day.]

Basically. Someone told me that it's better to start planting in the spring rather than the end of summer, but anything I would've put in the ground would have died anyway with this heatwave. If I can't grow anything to eat, I'd settle just as fine for flowers.

It's true that you're better off growing vegetables in the spring, but there's still some you can grow in the fall. In this planting zone, you could probably get away with planting beans, salad blends, onions, and turnips.

If you just want flowers though, pansies, asters, and chrysanthemums are best planted during this season.

There's enough room for an equal blend of both, so I guess I'll try those; nothing wrong with a big garden. You sound like you know what you're talking about.

That's your prerogative. Any particular reason why, though?

Two jobs. Enough stuff to do. School's boring anyway.

[sounds impressed] Two jobs? Aren't you an overachiever.

Not that it matters much if you find it boring, but employers like a good education. You could at lease get a better job so you won't have to balance two.

First rule: get a proper gardener before you kill anything.

You should h-- hey! Just because I'm new at this doesn't mean I'm destined to kill everything I plant. It can't be THAT hard.

Someone told me that chrysanthemums, pansies and asters are the best flowers to plant right now, so I guess I'll try those. No reason to get in over my head just yet.
