[In the park today, a sleeping puppy in his lap, Light looks peaceful, hair lifted by a light breeze. He's out here to get away from everything going on at the house, and the peace and quiet has let him think. The sunshine coming in through the leafy canopy that shades him casts his face in mottled light and shadow, and makes his vermillion shirt ( Read more... )

It's an interesting change. But empty. If this is your first move, it's not a good one.

Empty? Be gentle, Near.

Does it matter that it's "Light" and not "Kira"? I would think that you would want to hold on to your godliness for as long as possible. It's your only real power.

Or does the change come because you were reminded of your humanity?

A name is only what stock you put into it -- besides, I didn't choose Kira. Light is my real name. Is a god with a name less of a god? I wonder...

It's simpler than that. I had to do this, Near, that's all.

Yes. Guilty as charged, I'm afraid.

[ What the hell is this supposed to be? A confession? Stupid. ]

What's the point of saying this? It just makes a person come off as conceited.

Kira. [ He spits that out. ] Of what sort?

If you'd been here as long as I have, the reason for it would seem far more reasonable, and obvious.

What do you mean 'what sort'?

Pretentious braggarts don't make a difference to me.

What sort of killer are you.

I killed criminals, in my own world, for the sake of preserving justice and protecting the future innocent from cruel ends at the hands of criminals.

But I am not pretentious, nor bragging, and you are in no place at all to charge me as you have.

I fell asleep halfway through the lecture. Wanna give me the bulletpoint version? 'cause I can't figure out if you actually said something with all that talking.

Talking a lot sometimes helps with softening the blow -- but fine. I lied, and I'm admitting to it. Quite simple, really.

I almost wish names didn't matter so much.

It's funny. Hearing you talk like this now, you really are that same guy who made the weird network posts.

How are you going to stop the slavery? Not with letters...

It seems obvious once you know the truth, doesn't it?

I'm not sure yet. The thing is that the slavery is a fundamental part of the system here. It drives the economy, in a lot of ways, so it's not feasible or likely easy to just eradicate it in a single blow. Letters won't be enough either. What's needed is a strong union of voices. Not a handful of newcomers but a vast number of people rising up against slavery. It shouldn't be hard - so many here are effected by it - but the fact remains that a lot of those people will be intimidated by those who have gained money enough from it to pour that money back into squashing resistance.

I don't propose fighting fair. We give as good as we got, and we make it so our voice has to be heard. Politics, really; that's all it is. We need to make a stand, and to do that we need a powerful voice, and support behind it.

Sort of.

Sometimes, when I talk about being fed up with AGI, all I hear is 'Quiet, or you'll lose your job and never get another one.'

They don't play fair, with what they did to Sam.

That's the way it works, yes. You silence voices one at a time with threats like this. The way to respond - to see that those voices are heard - is to make it safe to speak up. Guarantee people jobs that aren't affiliated, if you must. Create residences where families protect each other. Everyone has something to lose from those who don't fight on the same level.

My own family was attacked, when I was a police officer at home, and I lost my father. My sister was influenced considerably by her ordeal. It's so easy to effect people when you have their family.

And though I'm not suggesting threatening the families of those who have this power, the fact remains that it is a risk attached. For us newcomers, however, we have already lost everything. Very few of us have a family here. It's a strong base to build from.
