[In the park today, a sleeping puppy in his lap, Light looks peaceful, hair lifted by a light breeze. He's out here to get away from everything going on at the house, and the peace and quiet has let him think. The sunshine coming in through the leafy canopy that shades him casts his face in mottled light and shadow, and makes his vermillion shirt ( Read more... )

It's an interesting change. But empty. If this is your first move, it's not a good one.

Empty? Be gentle, Near.

Does it matter that it's "Light" and not "Kira"? I would think that you would want to hold on to your godliness for as long as possible. It's your only real power.

Or does the change come because you were reminded of your humanity?

A name is only what stock you put into it -- besides, I didn't choose Kira. Light is my real name. Is a god with a name less of a god? I wonder...

It's simpler than that. I had to do this, Near, that's all.

A confession. And yet you are still telling lies.

Oh? Which part is the lie?

I'm sure you do not want us to see your flaws. But your lie is more focused in your message. You were Kira, before--here, as well as at home. Here, you sent out messages, and you killed--or at least, you took credit for killing. That was not because you had no home to return to. You didn't know, then, what you know now. Misrepresentation. You were motivated by your goals, perhaps--but don't seek sympathy.

I don't deserve sympathy, that's certainly the truth, but nor can I apologise for the deaths at home. I don't regret them, and I will not reject who I am in regard to them.

And yet you misrepresented yourself, in an attempt to gain allies. "Kira is just like everyone else." He wants to go home, but he doesn't have a home to return to. It isn't that you should apologize for the deaths. We know that you won't. But you should be honest. You killed here because you thought that you could get away with it, not because you had nothing left to turn to. This isn't your world to change like that.

You're wrong. It's our world as much as its anyone elses, Near, and I am as human, as desperate, as anyone else here. That is honesty. As for killing here, I wrote down one name, and the Death Note didn't actually work. It had no value here at all.

Because we live here, it's ours? You're still arrogant, even when you're pretending to be humble. I suppose some things are impossible to lie about.

Intentions are often as good as actions. Did it come back with you?

That's right; because we live here, it's ours. Why shouldn't it be? Anyone else can leave, but for us, this is our prison. Is it selfish to want it to be better than it is? Yes of course. But should we let it rot just because we don't belong? No. We've brought in knowledge from outside this world, from outside this city, and we are in the best position to impact it in positive ways--we should use what we know, not cower from those who have power and influence over us.

It? The note? Yes.

And I will agree to all of that. But Kira isn't positive. Where is the note?

I'm not using Kira.

The note is with Big Boss.

Changing your name doesn't change everything. It just makes it more convenient to certain ends.

How did he get it from you?

Clever, aren't you. It's true -- this unifies my identity here.

I surrendered it to him willingly. It was my wish.
