[Today, Light looks much better. He exudes confidence, is tidier, looking ruthlessly into the camera. Something of a smile curves his lips, even if it doesn't reach his eyes. The change is definitely visible. His fingers are knitted on the table in front of him, and the room he sits in is less degraded than the apartment he'd been in before. ( Read more... )

Do you think you'll need formal classes?

I'd like something, even if it's not formal. I always meant to learn but I never had the time at home; I suppose I should make it, now.

I could help.

You could? [Excuse his disbelief, please. It's not too obvious, since he doesn't want to be rude, but is this fragile looking little blond girl really offering to teach him?] Do you - ah - have practice in that sort of thing, then?

What form of self defense do you think you'd like to take up.

[Oh god what is that a video of?]

I've been thinking Judo, though I ought to look into learning to use a gun, I suspect.

I've always preferred a good sword to be honest. Better for fending off monsters that don't necessarily die from a gunshot or three. You can't use a gun to block an incoming claw unless it's a really big gun.

I don't think I'd be much use with a sword, if I'm honest. I'm not particularly strong, physically, and my height would only mean there was more of me to hit. I think I'd really rather be as far away from whatever monster it is that's coming after me as possible.

[Edgeworth's voice is still slightly weary and less enunciated than usual, but it's picked up that strained edge once more. He's on his last damned dose of painkillers, and after this one finishes wearing off he ain't taking anything more potent than acetaminophen.]

Thank you, Yagami. I needed to be told to leave the hunt for the perpetrators to the police. I was otherwise going to leap to vigilante justice.

Don't be silly, Edgeworth, I didn't say it just for your benefit. You should know that. People are very interested in making sure you stay safe ergo they should be reminded where you stand on it.

Then why did you address me?

I said 'not just for your benefit', so obviously in some way also for your benefit. I'll assume that was the drugs talking. Honestly, though, you expect me to believe you wouldn't have any kind of unprofessional interest in this case?

[The mention of Cloud is enough to draw his attention, though he doubts the offer of help was directed at him. Aerith maybe, or Tifa. Of course, that's not to say he was the type to stay out of their business.

His response is almost immediate, demanding, and utterly careless considering their currently precarious position after the recent attack.]

What do you know about brother?

[Light takes a moment to reply - it must be frustrating - because he's doing techy things to make sure the line is safe. When it is, and he can keep an eye on it to directly deflect any attempts to hack into the conversation as they have it, he looks back into the camera, utterly unphased, and speaks.]

I know he probably went back home to the time he was taken from, if he's not here any more. Not dead, but you won't find him, either, and that's not to say he won't come back, but it might be a while.

It's not just him, either. You seem like you have questions and no answers; nobody to answer them for you. That's why you went to the cathedral, isn't it? And after Edgeworth?

So I want to help you. Both of you. This is the only time I'm going to make this offer, so consider carefully what my help might mean to you--the city knows me very well, but I know it better. Nothing escapes my notice. My answers cannot be taken from me, but if you are reasonable, they will be freely given--the truth as I know it, if I have it. Nothing else ( ... )

[It is frustrating, and Kadaj is already at his usual restless pacing by the time Light replies. Oh, he wanted answers all right. But while he may be immature, he's not completely stupid. The offer is met first of all with suspicion- ShinRa had cemented that in all his lies and manipulations. Offers of "help" weren't easily trusted, especially not from those who had every reason to fear and despise him.]

Seems like you know an awful lot about me, hmm? [A pause, and then:] Mother can give me the answers I need. Do you really think you can do better?

I know your mother isn't here to answer your questions. I know that's why you killed those people at the cathedral--you were looking for her, so I heard.

My position here isn't to do better. You've made it clear you want answers and I am offering them. You don't want them and you walk away, or you accept them, and I help with this situation you've found yourself in. I was on the run from the police here myself, quite recently.

You're lost, without your guidance, without your purpose. I know exactly what that's like--I lost everything when I was brought here, again, and I am quite alone now; powerless. In essence, you have nothing to fear from me.

[He tilts his head slightly.]

What do you have to lose? You don't like my answers, then you go elsewhere for them, my only requirement is that you do me no harm, one way or another. Are the terms so unacceptable, or do you really not need the answers after all?

There's a reason behind my doing what I'm doing, no less because frightened animals, backed into a corner, will strike out needlessly as they did to Edgeworth. They will be pursued now, more intensely still, but I am offering them an avenue of retreat, which is essential in neutralising situations like this.

I don't need your permission, nor Edgeworths, which is why I tried to do this as subtly as possible, but you were always going to understand the message too. Please take care with that information, as I will take care with who gave it to me.

You don't need our permission, no, but you better know what you're getting yourself into. These two will kill you without any hesitation, and unless you can dodge bullets, I'd suggest you keep yourself at a very good distance between them.

...Even so, it's a smart idea to deter them this way.
