It's instinctual. Humans just forgot their natural fears as they evolved. That's why when an animal does start attacking and eating humans, they lose control and immediately have to hunt it down. They try to control their in-born fear reaction, by destroying the source of that fear.

You can keep them as pets, if you wish. Anything can be kept as a pet, if you can keep it. It's just that some creatures dislike being kept. Indeed, you may even simply decide to call something a pet simply because it occasionally comes to visit and lets you play with it.

As to the question... I suspect reactions would vary. Some people might panic and cry, some might go catatonic. Some people might like the idea and even get off on it. Some people might fight until there's nothing left to fight.
