Tut! [Alois shushes his little brother gently, sets his lobster in a metal mixing bowl for a moment, and reaches back into the tank. The lobster he pulls out at least has rubber bands around its claws.] This is your lobster, then, Luca. What are you going to name it?

[ he takes it, grinning. ]

Now Quackers has a new friend to play with! And, ummm... Clippers! [ his animal names are always original. ] What's yours?

[Alois Trancy has just handed his baby brother a lobster.

I'm going to name it Battle. [It's a town in East Sussex, but Alois thinks it's fighting for an angry lobster.] We've got to give them up come dinner, though, you know? So Quackers can only play for so long.

[Alois is already wavering, but he doesn't say Okay, not yet.]

Lobsters are food, Luca. They taste really good. You want a yummy dinner, don't you? [His hands are on his hips, now.]

[ for a minute it looks like luca is going to protest --and rather loudly-- frowning and teary-eyed.

but hadn't ben said being sad about things was useless? that it wouldn't get anywhere? and hadn't he decided he wasn't going to upset anyone so they wouldn't leave?

There you go, [Alois says, bending down far to kiss the top of Luca's head before he takes the lobster.] I promise it'll be good. Have you been wanting another pet, though? [And, turning back to the tank to drop the lobster back inside, he chides, adoringly,] You ought have told me! We'll get you one, okay? Tell me what you want and we'll have it gotten.

[ at the approval warmth fills him and he leans back against the tank. ]

A piglet! [He laughs, and doesn't at all seem put out by the request.] Really, you want one? We'll have to find somewhere out back to put it, then.

I wanna keep it in my room!

Piglets can't live in your bedroom, you silly thing! [He leans down a little, and pretends like he's boxing Luca's ears, although it's very gentle of course.] It'd make a mess of all your nice things.

[Alois is very proud that his brother is able to have nice things.]

Can it sleep in there? [ he grabs at Alois's hand, making big eyes at him. ] Please, Brother?
