[ Something has been bothering her since the Core started to yank newcomers back. It has taken days for Chane to gather her thoughts completely, whilst distracted by daily life-- getting started with work, fixing up the minor damage from the earthquake... Her words seem resolved to communicate what she can, although still fragile with uncertainty ( Read more... )

[ To him the other worlds everyone supposedly comes from are just fictions, places these characters believe they come from. His own home - Chane's too - is just a dream that's faded. But he understands that it's more complicated than that to everyone else. Normally that wouldn't stop him giving his own view regardless of what it'd make other people feel, but since Chane's included in "everyone" now he ties to be a bit more sensitive. Of course other people won't believe what he does, and probably wouldn't want to - better to think their friends have gone home than to believe they'd blipped out of existence. To that extent he agrees with her, even if he doesn't believe these people have actually returned home, but it's a little hard to put all that into words. He's about to reply when the video feed comes on and he realises this message is for him. He turns his own on, obviously pleased to get a message from her. ]Yeah, we hooked up a little after I arrived here. Actually we're gonna catch a picture sometime! You oughta come along. If ( ... )

[ Were Claire completely uninvolved in her life his view would be one amongst a sea of thoughts; just as valid as everybody else's, but like those others, unapplicable to her own circumstances. The world he believes in is for her, too-- and bit by bit, she tries to grasp at what it means for her, and everybody else.

Chane looks thoughtful, lowering her head a little, writing hand resting on her shoulder with the pen still balanced in the join of her thumb-- his beliefs are a compliment, considering his personally-assigned role of a god. Any reference to 'protecting', 'disappearing', 'vanishing', she automatically assumes to be a pact of physical protection and care, yet... When this line of argument comes from him, a person she mostly trusts and knows, it makes more sense. There's a visible moment of realisation, her eyes widening, as she applies his-- and her-- own feelings on the matter to the people she saw so distraught about the disappearances. ]

I... thought it was senseless to make bonds with strangers in this city. People ( ... )

[ There's a little grin-shrug combo to show he's glad she understands. Empathy’s not his strongest suit but he knows at least that there are other stories like theirs. ] I guess in situations like this you take what you can get. Better than nothing, even if it ain't permanent.

[ Of course that's not a problem for them, as far as he's concerned. Her final remark - and, almost more important, the look that goes with it - suggests she doesn't either. It sends a funny butterfly sensation through his gut, not unpleasant, just thrilled at being believed in like that: like he'd asked her to back when they first met. Now it seemed that he'd done right, found the one person in the world who'd put their faith in him to sustain them both, in spite of not sharing his particular beliefs in himself. There were other people, his brothers, who were confident in his abilities, but only in that they’ve assumed he’d take care of himself since he came back to them. This was different. She was trusting him, not just to protect her or her father, but to ( ... )

[ She hadn't any doubt from the moment she wrote it, but his words envelop and seize her heart completely. Much more than a confirmation, it is a promise, one without a goal or defined end in sight. Claire had mentioned before his lack of imagination when it came to the world's existence, and Chane is similar, but this promise... does not feel timeless because she does not think of the future.

No; it feels true. Her look intensifies, eyes bright, a breath caught in her throat. The weight on her heart settles, heavy yet comfortable, as though to remain there indefinitely. At last she whittles out the breath slowly and bows her head in a nod, lacing her fingers together over the NV. It could take a while for her to become used to this weight. ]

I don't think it's that kind of grieving, not really. Maybe some people are dead in their own world, and the people they leave behind here will mourn them going to a place where all they have left for them is death, but...

I don't know. I wouldn't wish this place on anyone, even knowing that it's not all the worse than a Tuesday in New York when Dr. Doom or Venom are concerned.

Being here might keep somebody alive...? That is possible.

... Dr. Doom?

Well, I've heard about it before from a good friend of mine -- how someone from another world was dead, but then found himself here, alive again. Of course, he could've been lying, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

[...] What about him?

I had not heard about that. In that case I can understand the grieving... [ Of course, to her, anything more than an occasional weep now and then throws 'missing somebody' over into 'grieving'. ]

--Sorry, I don't know. Who or what that person is, I mean. They are not in my New York if they are well-known...

My name is Nill.

[Smiling brightly at the feed, albeit a bit nervously. Her wings flutter.]

It looks really good!

[ --She's taken by surprise by the girl's silent appearance, when she looks ready to burst out a greeting. Chane offers a bemused nod in greeting first, forgetting the pen at her hand, then blinks just as nervously and writes her reply. ]

Hello. And, thank you... It turned out better than I expected.

Hello.

[She hesitates, her wings fluttering again, before quickly typing out,] I like to bake, too.

You live in the boarding house?

[ She hasn't the gall to say she is indifferent towards baking, in comparison. Although she wonders, since the feed between them both has been silent thus far, if Nill is the same as her. ]

Yes. Rin helped me move in not too long ago.

Suppose the world they would return to is not as sustaining a place.

Sustaining? In what sense?

There's no guarantee that leaving here means going home.

[He's in his room at the boarding house right now, and he is hungry. But he doesn't really know the girl yet. Not enough to feel comfortable hogging her food.]

Despite having been brought here from home in the first place?

[ It is not as though she would refuse that-- she hardly knows anybody here anyway. If she's offering, she's offering. ]

Not all of us were brought here from home, either.
