[ Writing her thoughts out is not one of Chane's exercised skills. Sharing her thoughts publically is unheard of. Yet there have been certain things going on in the port, especially on the network, that have caught her attention-- all she can do is note down a few of them for discussion perhaps, a reminder to herself to investigate (or, if they are ( Read more... )

Well, I didn't have parents back home either, so it's probably a lot easier for me than it would be for some people!

It does seem kinda weird that there are groups of people who came from the same world, I guess. But then, it's lucky for them to have friends they can count on, especially in a place like this.

Does a guardian care for you instead?

Yes. There have been more allies than enemies in this place, for those coming from the same worlds... Even without being from the same world, people are allying.

Yeah! His name's Gilbert. There are lots of other people in the house I live in, too!

That's a really good thing about this place, I think. I mean, it's sad that everyone has to come to a city like this where a lot of bad things happen, but I know if I didn't come here I would have never met a lot of people who mean a whole lot to me now.

Yes.

... The situation I was in before being pulled here was... similar. Not so many strange events as this place. But the people I met stayed close to me.

[ Children are so honest and straightforward. It is almost frightening how cleanly this one managed to express what Chane has been failing to pinpoint. ]

Depends on what you mean by the same time. Two of my friends that're here are from events I haven't been part of.

In your situation it would be the same place, then. It is enough that you are able to recognise them.

Guess you're right about that. Thing is, I'm not even sure if they're from my timeline. There's a certain point in our information where it seems to branch off or something.

I dunno, this whole thing gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Considering change of location is simpler than change in timeline. If that is what you mean by 'branching off'- a change in potential paths and events.

Dogs are loyal. You can't have been lonely.

My whole family is gone and I really miss them... but Michael takes care of me and my friends Jubilee and Spider-Man are here so it's not too lonely...

I thought Solitaire was a game you're supposed to play on your own?

It is a matter of company for you?

Apparently so, however I was taught how to play by my housemate, who said that it could be played in a pair. I have not yet memorised all the rules so it is difficult to judge if I am doing this correctly.

[ In other words, it's encouraging to have a game partner. Her game just got left on the floor. ]

Well my parents are gone a lot back home too 'cuz they save the world a lot. I've had a lot of babysitters. I'm kind of used to it.

Oooh. Do you want to play?

Understandable. A different world is a great shift from that, even so.

[ She doesn't understand the contextual meaning of 'saving the world'-- perhaps they are maintainers or higher beings of some sort. ]

... If you come here, maybe.

[ It is strange, to see his daughter adapting and...managing here, like others her age. Almost as though she had lived like this for a time.

It makes him wonder, briefly, if he has done a terrible thing by raising her how he did. It is a thought he does not entertain for long. ]

Are you enjoying yourself, Chane?

[ 'Adapting' would be giving her too much credit. She has been this way since departing with the Lemures; if not for the help of strangers she would be no better than a flightless chick flung from its nest, at least at the start. The question, even from him, takes her by surprise-- she does not fully know the answer herself. ]

I am managing, father.

[ He can't help but wonder, of course, if her 'managing' has anything to do with that man who claims to know her. ]

So it seems. Have you found a job here?

[ She only started coping better once somebody reached out to her and gave her a place to stay. His presence is an entirely different matter. ]

No. I do housework as payment for living here, instead of paying rent. That was the agreement for allowing my residence in this house.
