You've gone mad before?

Anyway, you ain't this time, believe me. It's really July 4th, 2011, and you're really here in Canada.

[She nearly drops the book in alarm, staring at it.]

...It can talk?

[She almost goes for her blade. Almost. She peers curiously at it, examining the pages.]

You heard me speaking?

Oh-- Christ, sorry, you ain't used to this. Er, I read what you wrote-- but look, I ain't the book. My name's Jack Kelly, I'm another person caught here. There's hundreds o' us. And I can hear you talkin' now, so don't say anythin' you don't want the city to hear.

[...Oh. Oh, well that certainly makes a bit more sense. (Sense. Really, Alice, it makes about as much sense as talking cats and mechanical mice.)]

Hundreds? So this... This really isn't a dream, then. It's real.

No, we can see what you're writing. Some work just like journals. I know a girl who had her sketchpad, for an NV. It's magic and it's some kind of data-thing too?

And yep! It's July 4th. There's going to be a picnic and more fireworks down by the lake before siren, so you're not late. And you'll get to meet other newcomers.

[Oh good lord, now there's a boy in her book. She stares at him.]

...Magic?

[Come now, Alice. If you can bring your blade with you to this...new dream, or whatever it is, then you can certainly believe in magic, can't you?]

I'm sorry, I don't...think I understand. What is everyone celebrating?

Some America-holiday? Actually, it's only a couple of us doing it, since Canada did their holiday on Friday.

...Oh, I see. It hadn't seemed too crowded in the streets today.

[Lord, everyone is going to scare this poor girl with talking from a book.]

It allows them to see what you're writing, to hear you when you talk, and it should also be able to perform a video function, which means you can see people while you talk to them. Perhaps you should try them out, just to get a feel for them all.

[Pauses.] And yes, it is July 4th, 2011. It can be hard to get used to, especially if it's a different year for you back home.

[She takes some time to respond simply because she's trying to digest all of this information. It makes positively no sense at all.]

So it really is like magic. How peculiar...

[She pauses.]

It's...1875 back home.

It can be like magic, in whatever sense of the word is used. Hold on a minute...

[She switches to the video function so that she can see her face.]

Like I said, it does depend on your NV, but it should have the three basic functions, no matter what it may look like.

[Nods.] And that would be... London, from your accent? You have a lot you'll need to catch up on, then.

[She looks surprised at seeing the face, but it's certainly a kind one. It's more than she's used to.]

Perhaps I'll take a look at it later. I wasn't aware my voice would simply carry!

[She nods.]

It seems so. I was nearly hit by a car this morning!

This place is very odd. But that man is right. You're not alone, though; other people are used to a different date, too. I was.

Really? What date are you more familiar with?

I'm from [Late 80s/early 90s date goes here because specific canon dates, what are those.] And I'm originally from Germany, not Canada. But...maybe not the Germany in this world. I don't know.

London, myself.

[Strange.]

How long have you been here, Miss?

One of them wouldn't happen to be a cat, would he?
