Consumer Whorgasm

I love how sometimes the universe kicks you in the face at the most face-kickingest moment possible. Like last Friday, when my 4.5-year-old Dell laptop died not one minute after I'd just spent eight hours reformatting its hard drive and reinstalling software.

Fortunately, there's a consolation...

That gigantic monitor just made me cry big fat tears of lust and jealousy. My home computer is a laptop (because I love them and can't imagine a desk top in my home ever, ever again), but my work computer is a desk top with the smallest screen in the history of human life. I therefore have to hate you just a teeny tiny bit because of your enormous monitor.

I always play with the idea of switching over to a Mac every time it's time for a new computer, but I never do. I fear teh chaaaaange!

I'm so happy you found something you love and clearly the Dell's decision to go tits up when it did only served to expedite your new computer buying. Gotta love how that works out!

I realized recently that I hadn't moved my Dell laptop from my desk in at least two years, and before that, the only reason I'd take it anywhere was so I could check my email and surf the web while I was away from home. The iPhone has eliminated that necessity. Also, the iMac was $1000 cheaper than the MacBook Pro I was considering. (I'm pretty demanding of computers, and I usually max them out with the best equipment, which is extra expensive for a laptop.)

It's never been less risky! If you have a spare copy of XP or Vista, you can dual boot into it for free with the Boot Camp software included with OS X, or you can run Windows inside OS X with virtualization software, such as Parallels.

Wow, I'm so not a computer person, but Macs are very, very sexy.

They really are. I used to think they were all form and no function, but they've really come a long way since the turn of the millenium, going from an inviable PC alternative to something that can run your PC inside it.

Oooooooooooooooooh!

*is jealous*

I'm gonna get down to the Apple store one of these weekends and take the plunge myself. Like you, I'm going to be lugging it home on MUNI, which I'm not looking forward to. Perhaps I'll splurge for a cab ride back home.

Strongly consider it. I deliberately went during lunch, when few people would be on the train, but still, people stared and made (flattering, yet unwanted attention-getting) comments. Rush hour would've been unbearable. Plus, box heavy (25-30 lb.) and awkward, like that of a medium widescreen TV, which it kind of is.

w00t. I have the 20". In fact, I think I've had every iMac ever, except the weird one that looked like a desk lamp.

Have you installed Windows via bootcamp? If not, wait a couple of months before you do it. Seriously. I lolled like, so hard when I saw how gimpy Vista looks, versus OS X.

We'll have San Francisco-like weather in hell before I install Vista on my Mac, or, well, ever buy Vista for any reason. I have Vista at work, and Officemate Ann and I LOL at the inaccuracy of its weather widget.

As for XP, I'm determined right now to get by for as long as possible without it. I bought Office 2008 and Photoshop CS3 for the Mac so I wouldn't need Windows, although there are a couple compelling reasons, such as Java 6 support (Macs are stuck on 5 because they do it themselves, unlike everyone else who lets Sun do it), a richer LJ client (Semagic for OS X, PLEASE!), and streaming movies via Netflix. (Okay, I'm laughing at that last one because nobody likes watching movies on their PC.)

I do not understand your compelling reasons, but I haven't returned my netflix in over a month, and I don't use an LJ client.

The only reason I installed Windows was for a class (I needed a 3D modeling app that was in-between Mac versions). I hate to be a Gloaty McGloaterson, but using Windows after seven years of having a Mac is like going from central heating to tending a camp fire. When I first heard that startup chime, my head hit the desk.
