Captain America: Civil War

May 08, 2016 22:37

For some reason this is my only Civil War icon on Dreamwidth. So, yes, I put on my hoodie of Captain Not Appearing In This Film and went to the matinee showing of CACW this morning.

The only way I can process it is to not remotely try and link it to 616. Which is legit I guess, but I think for the FEELS TRAIN 616 delivers a lot more. Or to put it another way, many exciting things happen to many characters in this film, but the central argument/fight/conflict does not have the emotional heft when it's two guys who are sort of work-friends and never got on spectacularly. That said, I liked the many characters and the snark, and although I felt like someone had gone through the script with a marker saying 'yes I know these long-separated best friends might hug realistically but it's too gay take it out' I liked the Bucky. I want Bucky/T'Challa (T'Chucky or WinterPanther according to Tumblr) and have convinced myself the Black Panther movie will be literally that, which I'm sure is accurate *g ( ... )

Yeah, I was hoping for more of a FEELS TRAIN than "fight between colleagues later ramped up by emotional revelation to create unnecessary drama" and I was also hoping, given that fandom has spent a decade picking over the relative defensibility of Steve and Tony's positions, that they would manage to create a Steve whose position I found more sympathetic, but apparently I am always going to be pro-Registration in these things. I was talking this over with someone on IRC and I think the conclusion we came to was that they were very good at depicting Steve's stubbornness but not so good at depicting that it is actually a flaw, because the moments that are held up in MCU canon as being Captain America Is Awesome tend to come with massive amounts of hurt for other people. (See also the CATWS speech, "The price of freedom is high, and I have decided that you're all going to pay it for me. Those of you who are hearing this and are not Hydra will probably be shot by your Hydra colleagues now." Which probably wasn't how that was supposed to ( ... )

I wouldn't call myself excited by Dr Strange, so much as pro-Mads Mikkelsen's hair *g* I meant more that it's the next stop on the road of MCU towards 'moar canon', and even that isn't very soon (I bet this is to do with X-Men and I guess that makes sense)

It has certainly way increased my excitement for the Black Panther film. Also I want to know if the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to turn up in the final Avengers films, because I really want Gamora and Natasha to hang out *g*

Well, X-Men is this month, so I have no idea why that would push the Strange movie back.

I hope the Guardians will be in Infinity War. We know that it seems like Guardians 2 will have at least one sequence set on what has to be present-day Earth, and I would assume that with the announcement that MY FAVE CAROL DANVERS will be in Infinity War we're at least going to space a little because come on. Carol Danvers. Space.

I am going to tell you one thing. See it again. The second viewing really puts everything together and helps out. I won't go into defending anyone here because 1 this is your blog 2 I am tired of it already.

But see it again. It helps.

Well, I'm not planning on getting in fights with anyone or reblogging character hate over Tumblr or anything. I don't think I'm particularly moved to see it again, though.

I am reading the fic anyway. :)

I am not particularly vested in the MCU or superheroes in general, but I think the movie set up a really poor conflict and then executed it equally poorly. Like, there are other angles they could have taken, where both sides would have legitimately good reasons - and what we got was a pro-registration side with some nuance (but whose argument, carried through to its rational conclusion, is basically 'superheroes shouldn't be a thing') vs. Steve Rogers is right because he's right and also PERSONAL LOYALTY FEELINGS, which is weak as fuck - but then Tony had his moment of super unfair blinded-by-vengeance, so Tony Stark is an asshole and therefore Steve must be right. Which isn't how arguments work.

I liked the stuff sophia_sol had to say (and the essay she linked): http://sophia-sol.tumblr.com/post/144266244297... )

Yeah, I think that's why my basic reaction to it is DISAPPOINTMENT. The fandom has had a decade to chew over the comics event (and, okay, mostly the conclusion reached by most people was THIS STORY SUCKS and also TONY IS A FASCIST because the comics were written by so many different people and the ones that portrayed him as not an asshole would be things you only read if you liked him anyway) and so I was hoping for something that was a good conflict with good reasons that would make me feel for both sides and instead I walked away thinking that Steve's side got a whole lot worse. Siiiiigh. And now the entire fandom is at each other's throats sending each other Tumblr anon hate ( ... )

I think osprey_archer is right that it's very difficult to ask any kind of moral question where the creators and audience have a very vested interest in one answer. But all the more reason to set up a different kind of question!

Man, megafandoms seem to be a nonstop wankfest these days. I only lurk around the edges of Star Wars fandom and it's bad enough. Like...there was always wank, but I think the sheer volume of Tumblr + the anon feature make things extra prone to wankspirals now? I keep anon turned off most of the time.

I feel like I've heard so much about the terribleness of Age of Ultron (and on the other side, that one Vox writer who thinks it was brilliant) that I probably ought to see it to make up my own mind.

I think maybe they should have done a different movie, but, you know, this one sells all the toys. :P

I can't say as I've ever gotten anon hate on tumblr; I keep anon on because for some reason there are several people who only want to interact with me via anon. But it's all been very well mannered. I think the people getting hate are mostly just the ones wanking at each other.

Well, let me know what you think of Age of Ultron! It's... definitely better than the comic it shares a name with.
