I think it would definitely be hard to get past a general feeling of "westerns are boring" because this definitely followed the "Western" script. I appreciate the genre much more after watching the "Fistful of Dollars" trilogy recently, but it certainly wasn't as good as the dinosaurs. And I do fully agree that the Doctor seemed too far out of character. I realize that they are trying to show that he doesn't work well without (a) companion(s), but it definitely seemed off to me as well.
As to the overall message, I thought that it was more along the lines of "everyone deserves a second chance if they are serious about it", but perhaps that's just what I wanted to get out of it.
Not really related quote from Heathers, "Teenage suicide: don't do it! Teenage suicide: she blew it!"

Never seen Heathers, sorry. :(

Maybe it would help if I'd ever really appreciated Westerns, but... I don't know. I'm really hoping next week will be better, but I don't think they can top dinosaurs.

I'm not sure that it is possible to ever top dinosaurs. The combination of dinosaurs, Nefertiti and Argus Filch is pretty hard to beat.
