Things read and watched

If you were ever considering watching the Dragonlance animated movie, don't. It is... really bad. It is unwatchably bad. I am at a loss as to why Michael Rosenbaum, Kiefer Sutherland, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Lucy Lawless all needed money that badly, which apparently they must have because they agreed to be in this thing ( Read more... )

I agree with you! I love the Dragonlance books - my favorite character is Raisltin. I will never be able to forgive Mr. Sutherland for what he did to the poor mage... It was horrible.

I spent most of the movie staring and wondering why they couldn't have paid anyone to actually properly animate the characters, and whoever thought the CG dragons were a good idea?

The Magicians spoilers...

Yeah, that struck me as weird too, how it switched tone from being about a wizard school to being a Narnia-analogue. I also thought Quentin's lack of Discipline was going to be a thing and then it never was, which, Chekhov would be spinning in his grave. Also when whatserface the love interest died, I kind of hated that. Only to have the crazy high school friend reappear at the end. The last quarter of the book basically just made me scratch my head for a long time.

lysimache read the second one already and says the second one doesn't mention his Discipline either. Huh. That is a weird, weird thing to bring up and drop like that.

I just figured the author was killing people off because he could, to be Dark and Gritty. It got a little weird toward the end. I will probably read the second one anyway.

*sigh* I'll probably read it too. Because my curiosity overcomes the weirdness just enough.

...And they mentioned it like SO MANY TIMES. I was expecting it to be some ridiculous talent and him to be the Chosen One or something typical yet enjoyable like that... but he's basically just a slacker? And a dick? I should be invested in this? What gives?

I had no idea that there was a Dragonlance movie. Ignorance is bliss, it seems. On the other hand, I'm terribly curious.

STAY IGNORANT. I promise, it's better that way.

I haven't read The Magicians, but Lev Grossman is going to be coming in to the store on Monday, so if he's entertaining enough I'll probably pick it up.

Haha, yeah. I work at an idie store that specializes in Mystery, SciFi, and Fantasy, and we have a lot of author events. If I haven't read them before they show up, I decide if I will based on how entertaining they are.

Oh hey, I just started reading The Magicians a couple days ago! And I'm really enjoying it, but at the same time having trouble making myself keep reading it, because yeah, gritty. Also, asshole main character who makes stupid life choices. But otoh, the book is so clearly written from a sort of fannish perspective, and that is so endearing and lovely to see. So.

It's kind of like if Holden Caulfield were the star of HP and Narnia. I really like the world and pretty much everyone in it except him. And, yeah, I liked how fannish it was, too.
