Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One

Nov 20, 2010 21:44

While I am hanging around anxiously in #yuletide waiting for shalott's updates on how the assignment generation is going, I figure I should mention my thoughts on yaoi the HP movie, which I did get to see.

Is it just me, or is Luna the best character in the whole thing? )

reviews, fandom: harry potter, movies

I'm pretty sure that Luna has been the best thing about the books *and* the movies since she was first introduced.

I read the book at blazing speed when it came out, too, so there's plenty that I didn't think I remember, but it totally felt like it was remarkably faithful in major ways (mostly, though, in the "cold scared sad hobbits Trio running around in the dark" ways, and the Frodo Harry staring at the ring locket and getting all emo and aggro about it ways). I do NOT remember the nekkid makeout scene ( ... )

This is true, re: Luna. :)

I think the nekkid scene was added special. Ick.

Yeah, Hedwig really got me. Ouch.

Well, the credits credit a bunch of named characters who AFAIK didn't have speaking parts. Like... was Cho Chang ever there? The credits say so.

Agreed on the animation, though I was sad about the dancing scene because Ron wasn't there and to me one of the strengths of the books is the friendship of the three of them, and they weren't being friends.

Like those snatchers guys - kinda weirdly pretty, but I can't for the life of me remember who they were.

The main snatcher dude, whoever he was, was really pretty. In a totes creepy way, sure, but I love boys in eyeliner, I do.

Yes, dear. :)

Also (d) there are a lot of suggestive spell incantations.

Snape is suddenly the newest Loreal model, seriously. He had volume and shine! Come to the HP dark side, they have cookies fab conditioner?

You know you want to write about Dumbledore's vaguely-Nazi boyfriend.

...Yes. Yes, I so do. Or at least know that such fanfic exists. Wait, the timeline is correct for him to have actually been his Nazi boyfriend.

But mostly I want Fleur's dress. WANT SO MUCH.

What spells do you mean?

Yeah, I wasn't kidding about his Nazi boyfriend. Which is why I say I would feel wrong in my wanting of it. :P I think people started writing some Dumbledore/Grindelwald after JK announced Dumbledore was gay, but I don't have the faintest idea where to find HP fic that isn't about Snape. (Such are the perils of living with the former mod of snapeslash.)

I admit to being twelve and giggling every time someone pitched the tent with "erecto".

Their love is so separated by fasco-political divide! Or whatever.

(Pff, I wouldn't know, all my HP slash is H/R. Snape gave/gives me creepy flashbacks to the teachers who liked to bully kids.)

Man, I didn't even notice.

I suppose you could write it like that. There's probably a way to make it less Wrong.

(Mostly I just read a *lot* of Remus/Sirius back when HP was a very very small fandom, then drifted out, and now I only read stories lysimache recs me where Snape and Harry have to get married to defeat Voldemort or whatever.)

Oh man I just got back from seeing it and it was so good! Especially because the doo de doo half the book is us in a tent being boring was sped up quite a bit.

I love, love, LOVED the animation explaining the deathly hallows. It was stupidly gorgeous.

Naked kissing freaked me right out. I was not mentally prepared for that and it was very bizarre and ALL SHALL LOVE ME AND DESPAIR!Galadriel.

I totally cried at Dobby's death. Even though I was somewhat glad to see him go in the books. (I'm a monster, I know.)

I read somewhere that the director intentionally drew from Nazi-period imagery, but to me it looked waaaaaay more Communist Soviet. *shrugs*

Overall I thought it was really well done. But I'm sort of still reeling.

Yeah, that was very pretty animation. :)

I just spent the naked kissing going "...what" at the screen. It's like the filmmakers ship Harry/Hermione, too. Which is going to make the ending of Part 2 awfully strained.

I can see how the giant crushing-Muggles statue might read as more Soviet, but I think when you're writing things on people's arms you win the Obvious Nazi Imagery prize. So it goes both ways, I guess.

I dunno about the filmmakers shipping Harry/Hermione. That moment in the diner when Ron says Hermione should wipe their memories and he brushes her cheek, I thought that was really sweet. Though that dancing scene was sort of weird. Who knows. All I know is that I'm not looking forward to the epilogue scene.

Yeah, I... maybe they'll just leave the epilogue out, huh? I can hope.

I really enjoyed the movie, but like most people, I don't really remember the book.

You totally weren't the only one who went 'But...wouldn't using more magic get them out of the trouble they're in?' Would probably have made for a duller movie though. Or at least one filled with less chase and action scenes, whichever.

Mainly, though, I was just happy to see the Trio. I forgot how much I enjoyed those parts.

Baby Grindelwald is very pretty, and I think fandom should get on that, even though I know it is wrong. You know you want to write about Dumbledore's vaguely-Nazi boyfriend.

Fandom totally needs to get on that. Let me know if you find anything decent.

Like, at the wedding, one wizard just *bam* Apparated out while everyone else was running around screaming. I feel that was really something the main characters should have done more of. I mean, okay, they can't Apparate when Ron is injured (apparently) or maybe at the Ministry, but... what about everywhere else?

I will let you know if I find anything, sure.

I think one of the times is because they got taken by surprise and they didn't have time to, because they didn't want to get turned inside out.

I was digging Snape's hair as well....

Baby Grindelwald is very pretty, and I think fandom should get on that, even though I know it is wrong. You know you want to write about Dumbledore's vaguely-Nazi boyfriend. Yes. Yes. and um yes.

I feel you on the Tonks and Remus thing I was like what the fuck that's it? Really now? You should totally check out the fics from the R/S games.

Loved the bits with Luna and the one bit with Longbottom on the train.

When the naked Hr/H kissing came up I was like wtf, then bad minamp is bad.

I squeed when bill came on the screen. Damn. See I got really into Bill/Remus for awhile after Bill got mauled, might have to look back into that. lol.

Hmm. Makes sense as an explanation.

Link me to the R/S games...?

I think my favorite line in the whole thing was Luna's "Harry doesn't want to talk to us right now but he's too polite to say so." That was Neville on the train?

I can't remember seeing Bill in the movies before, but I guess he must have been.

This was the first flick bill showed up in, I was just happy they didn't cut him out.

I wrote the AU riding on motorbikes with boys.

ETA: Yes that line was awesome, I was pleased with the casting of her father. I think thru the whole series the best casting they have done is with Luna.
