Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One

Nov 20, 2010 21:44

While I am hanging around anxiously in #yuletide waiting for shalott's updates on how the assignment generation is going, I figure I should mention my thoughts on yaoi the HP movie, which I did get to see.

Is it just me, or is Luna the best character in the whole thing? )

I'm pretty sure that Luna has been the best thing about the books *and* the movies since she was first introduced.

I read the book at blazing speed when it came out, too, so there's plenty that I didn't think I remember, but it totally felt like it was remarkably faithful in major ways (mostly, though, in the "cold scared sad hobbits Trio running around in the dark" ways, and the Frodo Harry staring at the ring locket and getting all emo and aggro about it ways). I do NOT remember the nekkid makeout scene.

I was kind of confused about the inconsistent use of magic, too, but whatever, handwave, it made for tense scenes.

And the Dobby scene made me cry *again*, just like when I read the book, even though I was never a huge Dobby fan. I was already a Hedwig fan, though, so ouch, that hurt just as much as it did when I read the book. I'm so not looking forward to the sad deaths part of the next movie.

Baby Grindelwald needs more screen time in the next movie, because he was quite pretty and I want many things written (beyond just "and then he looked pretty and jumped out a window").

So many characters that I only barely remember who I don't think even got names in the movie - that was weird. Like those snatchers guys - kinda weirdly pretty, but I can't for the life of me remember who they were.

The animated Three Brothers sequence was INCREDIBLE. That would have been my favorite part, except for the dancing scene (once I realized that it wasn't going to be The Kiss that the internet has been buzzing about, because that would have been so wrong). I loved the dancing scene because Harry and Hermione kept looking like they did in the first movie, just these flashes of youth and innocence and hope and happiness, and I miss that, and I almost thought it might have been CGI to make them look that much younger, but it was either that or beautiful acting/lighting/cinematography. And the song (Nick Cave, O Children) was SO SO SO perfect and I loved it.

This is true, re: Luna. :)

I think the nekkid scene was added special. Ick.

Yeah, Hedwig really got me. Ouch.

Well, the credits credit a bunch of named characters who AFAIK didn't have speaking parts. Like... was Cho Chang ever there? The credits say so.

Agreed on the animation, though I was sad about the dancing scene because Ron wasn't there and to me one of the strengths of the books is the friendship of the three of them, and they weren't being friends.

The main snatcher dude, whoever he was, was really pretty. In a totes creepy way, sure, but I love boys in eyeliner, I do.
