If people were able (all people who practice a religion) to see just how silly some of their religion's most cherished beliefs look to those who don't subscribe, there might be more empathy.
I can find apparently-stupid stuff in any religion I've examined thus far. But I don't really care to spend my time trying to shoot down matters of faith (except where it contradicts established facts like, oh, how humans have been around more than 6,000 years).
But devout followers are almost incapable of seeing their faith as Silly. To them it is deeply meaningful, and to mock it is to commit a deep serious insult.
I don't think I phrased my point well...I was trying to get across the idea that while non-Muslims might find the idea of its being sacrilegious to attempt to depict Muhammed...let's say "unworthy of serious consideration", if they have a religious faith of their own, they almost certainly have beliefs that those not of their religion would find equally unworthy of serious consideration. It might be nice if people stopped to look at it that way occasionally.
