Someone should start making Viking Fiction Memes

Jun 18, 2014 22:52

You find a piece of Viking fiction that looks quite good. It's got shieldmaidens. It's got magicians.

Then you discover that the magician are all male - not a völva, not a spækona, not a wife doing simple protection spells with a spindle. And the male magicians and seers aren't even a tiny bit effemminate or even just rumored to be gay. Also, no ( Read more... )

Being passionate about weird stuff is just what I do. XD And I'm also really happy about having met you, both because I finally get a chance to talk about these things and because I just enjoy talking with you. <3
Alas, you're right. We only learn a few things, and then we think that's all that there is to it because nobody ever bothers to tell us otherwise. It's kinda depressing, thinking about the kind of stuff we're missing out on everyday.
Still, one would think that people writing fiction about ancient societies should have the most fun researching on them and getting them right. But that's probably just me having too much faith in mankind again ... *sigh*
You know, Vikings started fascinating me in the first place because it seemed like there was just so little about them. I mean, it was like we had Greeks and Romans handed to us on a silver platter, and there was something about Egyptians too in our textbooks ... but what about them ( ... )

BTW, talking about awesome songs, I think this one was linked in the description of one of the comics, but I'm not sure, so ...

But in case you already saw this video, have another one as well.

Makes you wonder what Norwegians actually think about their neighbours, doesn't it? XD

Oh, I willFirst, it'll be just SATW. Then, perhaps you'll check Niels & Gang out, because it's the one with the threesome and the psychopathic but absolutely fabulous Dane and the - wait for it! - Scottish James Bond parody who may look more like an Englishman but is actually into kilts and horse-riding and caber tossing. Then, you'll discover all the rest of it - and soon you will be lost ( ... )

That song- That song is absolutely A-W-E-S-O-M-E! I'm wheezing, right now! X°D
I didn't know the second vid either, and I'm not quite sure I get it at all, but it's hilarious anyway - does it make any sense? Maybe I'm mad, but I was laughing hard just by hearing those accents.

You're cruel. And I love you, but you're cruel all the same. I mean, how can you talk of Scots Bond parodies - to me! - and expect me not to fall right into the abyss? I am very much afraid. For what little is left of my sanity, if not else. XD

I knew the drawing of Loki and his children, but the other two strips you linked are completely new to me. The pregnant gods AA is fabulous (I swear I'm gonna look for some info about Celtic Guy, 'cause he looks absolutely terrified and it's too funny)! And the one about Tyr? So adorable! *_*

*joins the silly dance*

Have mercy, I was watching it (and yes, of course I turned on the subs, I'm not that masochist yet! XD) with barely five hours of sleep on me. Rough night spent comforting a heartbroken friend, you know... Let's just say I'll watch it again tomorrow and probably laugh with more awareness. ;P
I loved the Finn, btw, he was total bonkers, but the Dane and his accent cracked me up! XD

Uuuh, Chùchulainn! Haven't heard of him in quite a loooooong time. It shows, I should definitely brush up on my celtic lore. u_u

I should start torturing you as well, but I'm not sure I know how... yet. <3

Sorry, it's just that I suddenly went "wait ... I DID link her the subbed one, right?" XD Anyway, I hope your friend feels better now. :)
... Though the original video is funny as hell too, if I you turn on the automatic subs. XD
The Finn is adorable, I just love the way he talks - the way he says "foyer" always crack me up, and his final lines are deliciously creepy. <3
But the Dane ... I want to feel sorry for that poor sod, but then he opens his mouth and I just burst out laughing! XD

Can't wait until you find something worth torturing me with, darling. I'm soo scared ... <3

Irrelevant P.S. time: have you had a chance to check out the Nibelungenlied parody? It's totally fine if you haven't had the time or something else, just asking. :)

As a matter of fact, my friend wrote me this morning to tell that he talked things out with his sweetheart. All's end that ends well, I suppose. ;)

Back to business, though. The Finn is indeed creepadorable (his way of saying "foyer" cracks me up too! XD) but the Dane. The Dane! If that portrayal of the Danish is even remotely accurate, I'm afraid I can never go to Denmark: I'll just downright laugh in the face of every poor soul who tries to approach me. XD

As for my torturing weapon of choice, I'm still looking for the perfect one, but in the meantime I have a bonus or two for you! Have one of my fav fanart!Lokis on the web, to begin with, and then a silly little comic about Az & Crowley dealing with the nativity. Also, since I'm a cynic and love dark humour to bits, do you know I'm bored to death? It's a super-funny comic about a very ill-fated Grim Reaper. XD

Would you believe it? I've just finished reading your parody! XD
It's adorable, smart and funny and just right in so many things! I don't even know what made me laugh the ( ... )

I'm happy to hear it, both for him and for you. ^^ My older sister is stuck in a phase where she thinks she can make things work with a jerk, and my mom and I have to bear with her ...

Here is another video about Danish by Norwegian comedians:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-mOy8VUEBk

I REALLY hope it's just friendly teasing and exaggeration. Otherwise, I fear I won't ever be able to take Denmark or Danes seriously ever again. XD

I already knew that Loki fanart, but seeing it again is always a joy for my eyes. <3 And I think you got me hooked on those Good Omens fanarts - I started looking in the rest of the gallery, and it's all so damn perfect! *-*
I didn't know that webcomic, but I will surely check it out. It seems just so cute for a comic about death! XD ( ... )

I'm sorry, that's usually messy... I hope for her and for you that the jerk in question becomes less of a jerk or that she decides to move on.
Funny thing is, I'm not that great with romance & relationships, myself, but I'm apparently good at giving advice about it, or so my friends seem to believe. Go figure... XD

That video about Danish communication barriers is now one of my favourite comic sketches EVER! It's sidesplitting - and I specifically looked up this word in the dictionary 'cause the level of awesomeness just called for it!

I must say, some Good Omens fanartists I'm quite addicted to: sometimes they get the characters just right and you can't help but fall in love with them. <3
And I'm positive you're gonna love at least a couple of those little strips about poor bored Death. He (it? she? ...let's roll with he) finds some ridiculously hilarious ways to entertain himself. XD
And thanks for suggesting The Adventures of Wiglaf and Mordred! I've just started reading the first chapters and I'm quickly falling for both Wyglaf ( ... )

I really hope so, but my sister seems to gravitate towards jerks for some reason. This one romanced her a bit and kissed her, then stopped hitting on her and texting her to hit on some girl my age (... and he is almost 30. Am I seriously the only one who gets creeped out thinking about it?) ... and then he came back to my sister saying the fling with the barely-legal kid didn't mean anything (no, really?) and that he was way too busy with his Master's degree and his music (he is the director in a marching band) to handle a serious relationship. But, oh, he likes my sister, so could she please forget the way he treated to be in a not-really-serious relationship with him ( ... )

Holy hell, that's some very bad jerk, imho! O_O Just for the record, how old's your sister? Not that it matters, if I were in her shoes I'd probably tell the dickhead to go live his exciting life faaaaaar away from me whatever my age, at that point, but you know... I keep asking myself why so many people are attracted to idiots & bastards, though. You'd think one would be happy to avoid that kind of crap, not knowingly run into it! *confused ( ... )

My sister is 28, but naturally I agree with you and I keep telling her the same thing. She says that he isn't really a jerk as much as a dork who just discovered romance and doesn't know how to handle this kind of stuff - that he was scared of her at the beginning but now he is opening up, or something like that. I think now she's planning of training him like a dog ...
(Needlessly to say, I fucking hate it when people try to change their partners. I mean, if you like them the way they are, why change them? And if you don't like them, why are you into them in the first place?)
The thing is, my sister is an intelligent person. Heck, she is smart, cute, opinionated, sensible - and one hell of a stubborn bitch when she wants to. And for me it's really depressing seeing her pining for that guy ( ... )

Love is blind, uh? Deaf too, if I have any say in the matter. XD
I hope that your sister finds happiness, wherever she may try and look for it, and if her choice lies with mr. Dorky, there, I at least hope that she's right and that he's truly trying to become a better, more affectionate man.

If everything fails, well, I suppose you still have the nod & smile reassuringly option, but I sure hope you won't need it... é_è

Soundcloud if filled with Supernatural (and Doctor Who, and Game of Thrones, and many many more) fansongs and some of them are quite beautiful - this girl here, for example, is one of the first fan-songwriters I bumped into. I think the musical-project I had in mind was actually put on permanent hold due to some organizational problems, but there's plenty of fanmusic nevertheless, so... ^^

You're welcome, btw. <3

I do hope so, too. But Mr Dorky better change soon, or he will have to face the righteous wrath of an angry younger sister. XD

Wow! Thank you so much for linking that, I will surely check it out! **
